Ditching a Playoff to Save the Rose Bowl

can anyone summarize this ^ :D

I can...

The Big Ten has abandoned its smart, savvy push for a playoff that featured on-campus semifinal sites and a title game open to bid by cities across the country, including the Midwest, because it just couldn't bear the thought of cheating on a bowl game...

No, they abandoned it because they couldn't get it, thanks to solid opposition from SEC and B12.

"For us it's critical to keep the Rose Bowl in the equation," Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis told reporters Tuesday after Big Ten meetings hashed out the conference's likely preferred plan. How critical? Well, so critical that they're willing to make business decisions based on emotion

No, they're making them based on reality.

Except in the same meeting the Big Ten proposed moving bowl eligibility from 6-6 to 7-5, which means maybe half a dozen smaller bowls will, indeed, be destroyed and the experience of those players apparently isn't worth protecting.

They're definitely not worth protecting - and the schools generally lose money on the smaller bowls.

The athletic directors talk about trying to maintain or improve the meaning of the regular season, but then they want to take out the incentive of home-field advantage so it really doesn't matter whether you finish first or fourth.

(Facepalm) Really? Alabama or Ohio State is going into their conference championship game thinking "boy, we better win or we might slip from 1st to 4th"???

And what about the chance for the Big Ten to finally stop playing games in SEC/Pac 12 country, maybe see if one of those sunshine programs can handle a few flakes of Midwest snow?

Gosh, yeah, and those sunshine programs have no objection at all to the concept.

As usual, wetzel is a stupid dick.

Yup.

Wetzel is a one trick pony at this point. He hates the tradition and romance side of college football, because it is not exactly like his beloved NFL....and most of all,he despises the Big Ten. Perfect mind-set to make him the guy to have all the solutions for the sport on its death-bed..college football...which happens to be more successful than it ever has been, from every standpoint.

He wrote an expose, and he is continues to push the book to line his pockets...which makes him so much more honorable than those bowl directors....rightttt.

As has been pointed out above, the cold weather playoff spots never had any traction anywhere. Of course in Wetzel addled brain, all the Big Ten had to do was stick to their guns and the rest of the leagues would fall right in line...sure,Dan.

I see Teddy Greenstein as the sane observer of the college football scene in stark contrast to Wetzel, and enjoy his evisceration of Wetzel next fall on the BTN when Wetzel comes on to hammer the Big Ten. Greenstein gets it, Wetzel does not.

I agree that reform should happen in terms of the bowl system, but junking it is not the cure for what does not ail college football.
