Ditch the Zone

I think you are overvaluing May's contributions last year. I think he had a fantastic season last year and produced much more than I expected him to but he only averaged 21.8 minutes per game last season.

So to use your reasoning, he was only on the opponents toughest assignment for about half the game last year.

But I don't remember Iowa playing strictly man to man all game either. Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Iowa mainly run the man to man defense last season when May was in the game?

Idk how our zone can be so effective at the beginning of the year then just go to ****. Our players are having trouble rotating over to the next man. They kept slipping behind our zone last night because our plays don't have any awareness of what's around them and were playing the zone as if they were just playing one man.

Yeah May would not cure this scrap-heap defense we are seeing. The bad defense is the result of regular breakdowns in team defense concepts.

I think his leadership would help tho.

Maybe I am wrong but I dont remember a lot of zone last year.

If I had to guess I would say it 90% man to man last year.

Like I said, I could be way off.

They just don't play as a team. Whether it be a zone or a man-to-man defense, you have to play as a team. Help out on defense. Box out and rebound. If everyone is doing their own thing or the wrong thing, you get what we've got here.

HOw about some trapping out of the man and zone defense and trying some 1-3-1 trap zone. Teams have tape on us and they see how we play man and 2-3 zone, make a couple extra passes against the hawsk and the dee breaks down,

I have noticed when Fran has them do some trapping for a few minutes it works pretty well usually

It is almost like playing fast break on defense where you are running and scrambling all the time and I think the players like it
