Disappointing Season

Titled "Disappointing Season" and includes "all that being said it was a great season"

OK........guess that about covers it.
This was such a fucked up season due to COVID: delayed start, daily testing and protocols, contact tracing, modified schedules, games canceled at the last minute, no fans in the stands, cardboard cutouts for people, piped in noise, blocked off sections of arenas, subs and coaches masked during games, plexiglass along the scorer’s table, Zoom coach and player interviews, quarantining now in Indianapolis for a month, some of the blue bloods having to withdraw from post-season due to virus issues.

The fact that Iowa made it through the year without having to cancel its own games and finished ranked No 5 is a huge accomplishment. Proud of this team.

Do I wish they’d be playing today? Hell yes!

They’re not. But I’m eager to see where they get placed and how well they do in the next two weeks.

At #5 with a 2 seed is disappointing? 4 losses were to Gonzaga, Illinois (2), and Michigan... all in Top 4!!!
Iowa has played them all except Baylor. So we know where they stand. I have 6 capable of winning it all.
Gonzaga, Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Kansas and Oklahoma St.

I support VT's notion in that it is a disappointment in the sense that if it all ended today....Iowa would have no hardware to show for it. But, the NCAA tournament is still out there. So, the ultimate grade is incomplete. But, they get an F from me (for future Program Building) if they don't get to at least the Sweet 16 relative to expectations. Fran would ultimately get a C from me on the year because he would be meeting my minimal expectations of having his program in the NCAAs 3 out of every 4 years.

Iowa was #5 preseason. They're #5 now. In no way is this season a disappointment relative to expectations. They literally played to exactly what the expectation was, at least if you go by rankings.

Iowa let a few games get away that I'd like to have back, but we haven't had a season like this literally in decades. I hope everyone out there enjoyed it a little...

Next week is going to go a long way in ultimately determining this team's legacy, though. Gotta survive the first weekend for once. Do that, and everything else is gravy IMO. A first or second round loss will be a major disappointment.

Also disagree with OP. I like how this team got better on the defensive end and finished relatively strong. (Illinois looks to be a national championship team.)

that said, if we fail to get to the second weekend, I would think the players will acknowledge real disappointment. But looking at the 2- and 7-seeds, it looks good for Iowa

Been a great season and I’ve enjoyed the heck out of it. But all that matters is next week. That’s the legacy for this group. The only way Iowa has a disappointing season is if they don’t make it of next weekend.

Correct. The regular season is complete and in the books. Highest final ranking since 1956. Yep, that's a success.

This has 2005-06 written all over it, though. Get to the Sweet 16 or further, then all is good. Lose early, and it'll feel like that season all over again. Nice regular season but all we can think of is NWST. I don't want that to happen to this team. I can handle losing to an equal or better team, but no upsets this year, please.

I am assuming the 2/15 victory. That's why I am looking at all the potential 7/10 matchups.

For what the expectations were.

In my opinion, it was a disappointing season for what the expectations were. I just think we did not have the athleticism and the quickness of other top teams. We still managed to have some good wins and kept our #5 ranking. I think our the greatest accomplishment we had this year was finishing the season ranked #5. In my memory that is the best any Hawkeye Basketball Team has ever finished in the rankings.

That being said I feel that the they didn't always show up to play their best or show they wanted to win. Now I know even the best teams will not play their best every game, and I know that some of the best teams will take a night off and not show the discipline and will to want to win. With that I say the Hawks seemed to show up to games on many occasions as if they did not want to give that 110% that makes a team truly great. In my opinion I did not see them come out like abandon to win the game or se the tone right out of the gate, Yes they did this on occasion but many more times then not they seemed to come out lackadaisical or mailing it in or as if they had just ate dinner 10 minutes before the game.

All that being said it was a great season. Lets see how they do in the NCAA's.
Would you have accepted a #2 before the season started? I’m guessing yes, so I’m not sure how it can be a disappointing season to this point.

Its funny cause those 87-88 and 88-89 teams would easily beat the pants off this years team. Not understanding how good we are, is a personality trait.
In today's world, BJ, Eddie and Roy all turn pro before those teams have a chance to be great. Context is everything.

This is the best collection of skill players Iowa has had since the '86-'87 season. But against elite competition, the ceiling is a bit lower than we'd like because the starters lack elite speed and strength. The reserves have more athleticism but aren't seasoned enough yet to succeed against teams at that level. Illinois peaked at the right time and is probably even money with Gonzaga to win the whole thing. Considering what they did to Rutgers on Thursday and what they're doing to Ohio State right now, Iowa did well to keep the game as close as it was. Iowa will get a 2 seed in the Baylor or Gonzaga region and has a great shot at an elite 8 run or better.

To say it was a disappointment this season is similar to getting a shot at Lily and saying she sorta sucked. C'mon man we could make a nice run in the dance too.

Disappointing season? Are you kidding me?! Please disappoint me like this every year!

If they bomb out next week I will be crushed. But to judge the whole season on how/when it ends in that final loss? In the NCAA Tourney where weird shit happens EVERY year and great teams fall short of expectations? Nope.

It has been a great season! Thank you Hawks! Now for some icing on the cake please!

Getting hardware has almost as much to do with other teams in your conference as it does to do with your own team. Not getting hardware this year was 99% because 2 of the best 4 teams were in our conference. We were the 5th best team this year. Im not going to crucify Fran because two of the four teams better than us happened to be in the same conference. And when you are the 2 seed for the 2nd time ever, who gives a flying F about the previous 10 years?

Easy on the FOX comparison. Their vile, lies and hate probably cost many Americans their lives over the past year.
What a jackass comment ill placed. Hell our moron fatass gov put Covids in nursing homes killing old people. That's real right there.

3 teams. We were the 7 overall seed. Ohio state was 6, Michigan 4, and Illinois 3 so in the end we ended up 4 in conference really.

This is like the old podcasts hearing Jon say we finished 3 in the conference but we were the 5th seed. If you beat those teams and got the 3 seed you were third place but if you lost the tie breakers you were fifth. Weird rankings this year but we are not a top 5 seed and we won't be ranked in the top 5 tomorrow. I'd love to talk like Jon Miller does but I gotta be real and not sweet talk it to seem a bit better than it really is.

Happy with the year but not totally satisfied. Not losing the 7 point lead to the crappy Gophers and taking one from Indiana would have been better.

How happy I will be really comes down to this tourney run.
