I know about Twitter and I understand the benefits it has.....especially regarding global communication in countries that strictly enforce media communication (i.e. Iran election demonstrations, etc).

However, you'll never be able to convince me that there's anything remotely interesting or cool about a grown man following the tweets of a high school kid. I'm pretty sure they have those to communicate with their friends/teammates.....not some 40 something dork that doesn't have anything better than to live vicariously through a high school athlete. Some of you need to seriously reconsider your priorities.

I believe you are out of touch with social media. If all he wanted was to communicate with just friends/teammates he would use facebook.

Seriously quite jumping on this guy for saying he was going to follow a potential recruit on Twitter. Rob Howe is probably already on there too, take it up with him also if you have a huge beef with it.

For gods sake he is not connected with him via Western Union! It is Twitter....

Your response tells me how little you actually know about social media. Like it or not, I am willing to predict that twitter has/is becoming a major tool for communication. You need to become a member and look at who is connected to who. Twitter has become the fastest source for immediate news (yes, you have to carefully evaluate the source and the related news), including what player likes what teams, heck, there have been numerous athletes announce their college of choice on Twitter before any analyst has had the opportunity to break the news.

You can bash me all you want, but you are also one that has bashed facebook, ebay, linked-in, and probably even computers at one time!

I would follow him if he had something interesting to say. His tweets are typical high school nonsense. No thanks.

It's not that I'm saying there is something wrong with twitter. It's a great communication tool for certain things. But using it to follow a high school kid's day is pathetic. Unless you know the kid or at least are his age. I'm too old to decipher half the crap they put on there anyway.

Nebraska is correct here...

In fact it goes beyond what he's stated, there is a new slice of proactive marketing centered around social media. Marketing-oriented firms aggressively monitor and influence discussions on focused Facebook, Twitter, discussion groups, etc directly pertaining to their market influencing people's perceptions of companies, products, services, etc.

For instance, "hey, I had a simliar negative experience with ABC company and went to XYZ company and had the best experience I've ever had. I'd highly recommend them. The person supplying the "comment" of course works for XYZ company. Maybe not quite as strong as I've stated but you get the general idea.

Trust me, I've sat in on meetings where social medica marketing strategies have been discussed. And I'm an IT guy...

While I did not say it very clearly, the technology is here to stay, it is and will continue to change many things including sports. I do not know if it will happen, but I can see social media competing with paid sites like Scout or rivals. Why pay money if kids are going to announce where they are going on twitter and twitter is free....now this might be a stretch, but it will have an affect!

Please visit this page which asks the question: Are you an Iowa Hawkeye booster?

Booster Info.

I am guessing many of you would be deemed a booster. Belong to an I-Club? You are a booster. Have you purchased seasons tix? That could make you a booster too if the NCAA wanted it to.

Therefore, following a kid on twitter is not against the rules. Tweeting him or 'giving him dap' on the street to pimp Iowa, while it may not alert the NCAA, it's probably unwise to go out of your way to seek people out.

I don't think the NCAA has specifically addressed social media as boosterism just yet, but I am guessing they will one day.

You nailed it on the head, Jon.

I think I recall hearing about a Facebook group that got a school in trouble - Kentucky maybe? I can't remember, it was a couple years ago...

Anyone know how to trim my ball hair with steak knife? I heard this thread figured that out. That was a classic line.

Technology is providing a medium I don't think many of us anticipated...following the musings of a 17 year old athlete via twitter. Did any of you have any good to say at 17.
