Des Moines

I believe they have games in Chicago every few years. I have never gone to it and I don't care to go to it unless Iowa is playing. I went to Nassau to see Iowa in 2001 when I lived in NY. I would be surprised if even 5% of the population of NY or Chicago even realizes it is in town. I don't think most people in a city give two rips about it being hosted there unless (a) the town generally doesn't have a lot going on or (b) their team is in it.

Anyway, before you continue to bash Des Moines, please realize there is a South Park episode about it, therefore it is by definition, relevant.

I was living in Buffalo at the time. The Boss FTW!

Are you suggesting that there is a direct or indirect correlation between the amount of other cultural activities in a metro area and its interest in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament?

As for South Park - I see your point, but it is a well known fact that the writers of South Park enjoy recreational herbal narcotics. Do we know what their mind set was when writing that episode?

Legal Disclaimer: I don't know whether it is a fact or not that South Park writers smoke pot. But since they are from Colorado, I'm guessing they do.

Possibly, yes. If I were the Des Moines Committee, I would stress that the ICubs are not yet playing and that Living History Farms and Adventureland are either closed or running very limited attractions during the NCAA Tournament so they will not detract the locals' attention from the Tournament. Hell, the NCAA is probably worried that the other attractions mentioned above will siphon off all of the potential attendees.

HA! That's pure comedy. Not only do you not have any idea about events or event planning, but you are also a stand up comedian. Is there an approved project in place right now? Because to build the type of hotel you'll need they had better start breaking ground.

Has the NCAA been notified of this? Because it seems as though the 2013 tournament games have already been decided.

Better hurry up!

City Council approved the project back in February. I assume they're in bidding/planning process right now. Sounds like it will be a multi-structure 32 million dollar hotel along the river. Right now it plans on completion to be Spring 2013.

Once that gets built, do you think it would put Des Moines on the fast track to host a Super Bowl? They are doing the 2014 Super Bowl in the Tri State area (a cold weather outdoor venue) so I think the weather wouldn't be a factor. They could have the game at Drake Stadium and run shuttle buses from the motels downtown.

Once it is held in Des Moines, I have a feeling they will stop rotating it around and just keep it there.

I hear that since more people live and work in Des Moines than Omaha, the NCAA is also talking about moving the CWS to Sac Taylor Stadium.

So the College World Series, Super Bowl and the first round of the NCAA tournament are coming to the City of the Silent "S."

Is Lollapalooza far behind?

Doubtful:D I also don't think Des Moines gets the NCAA mens event here. Previous poster questioned if a project was even in the works.

Ouch, that hurt!

Screw da tournament we going to Adventureland!

How mad would you be to pack up the kids and wife for a cross country drive, then find out Adventureland is closed due to repairs?

I would want to punch something!

For the first time in quite a while Cinncinnati has put in a bid to host second & third round games in 2014. It is a great location with about 1.8 million people in the metropolitan area.

Plus, Columbus, Indianapolis & Louisville are about 100 miles away. Lexington is only 85 miles from Cincinnati. If the NCAA puts Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio State or Purdue in Cincinnati; tickets will be few & far between.

Who does the NCAA put in Des Moines to generate similar interest?
