Des Moines is better than Minneapolis

The Twin Cities is the 16th largest metro area in the nation, right between Seattle and San Diego.

Des Moines is 91st, between Toledo, OH and Scranton, PA.

The comparison is not even close. With all due respect, you are an idiot and a moron if you think DSM is better than the Twin Cities.

It's not the size of the city, it's what you do with it.

Seems redundant. Can you be an idiot without being a moron?

This hate week, I have had to endure some good natured ribbing from Minnesota fans. They hate Iowa and they like to talk trash, but unfortunately they know their team can't back up their mouths (note my Minnesota Sucks Fun Facts thread), they try to bad mouth the state of Iowa instead. One of the things I keep hearing is that all of the towns in Iowa are terrible, and we don't have a "real" city like Minneapolis. I'm sorry, but that really upsets me. I have been to every major city in the Midwest, and I'll take Des Moines over any of them, particularly Minneapolis.

Dude, we kicked their butt. Their football program is weak and their fan-following pathetic (the definition of fair-weather).

But don't push it. You're writing a check you can't cash. Des Moines is nothing to get excited about.

I'm sorry, but Minneapolis is BORING. When I was in Minneapolis, the "fun" activities we engaged in from our hosts included; An outdoor sculpture garden (boring), Minnehaha Falls (crowded and under-whelming, plus an old lady fell down the stairs), the Mall of America (Oh wow! Another Caribou Coffee!), and a Twins game (27 games out of first). Des Moines has much better things to do, plus much better traffic, a real river, and cheaper hotels and restaurants.

Sorry, but Iowa>Minnesota.

Dude, we kicked their butt. Their football program is weak and fair-weather fans a joke.

But don't push your luck. You're writing checks you can't cash. I love my home state, but Des Moines is nothing special.

But is it really?

I have to confess...in 14 years of living up here, I have never gone. All the other Iowan's living up here that have gone, always talk me out of it, saying I will be disappointed. This year... a life long Minnesotan that went to the Iowa State Fair a couple of years ago, said that she wouldn't bother going back to the MN fair, because the Iowa fair is so much better.

So there.

There are 2 ways to look at this. Just for living purposes, Des Moines or should I say the Western burbs are a great place to live. The rest of Des Moines is a dump. There is much less traffic obviously in Des Moines and the cost of living muck less expensive.

Professionally, it's a different story. Minneapolis, as mentioned by someone else, has several F500 companies. Des Moines has The Principal Financial Group. I spent 10 years there. Good company but a little bit cultish. Minneapolis wins the professional aspect easily.

I'm an Iowa native, but Minneapolis has some great things Des Moines will only ever dream about.
Yeah. East village is a dump. Western gateway is a dump. My neighborhood south of grand packed with mansions and old growth forest... What a colossal dump. You can keep the burbs, pal. They're all yours.

Minneapolis has the worst weather of any major metro in the U.S. The road system was evidently designed by a chimpanzee on crack, and it is infested by a bunch of arrogant ****** who think spending tax payer dollars on a stadium for a D-league NFL team is O.K. One positive is eye candy in the form of leggy Scandinavian chicks...

The only thing good in Minneapolis wears #52. My vote is Des Moines by far. Unless you are making $70,000 plus I don't see the point of living there

I live in the Twin cities now and I hate it. Worst place I have ever lived. Like others said getting around is a nightmare. Whoever designed their freeway layout was probably high. People are snobby for some reason, I can't figure out why. Cost of living is ridiculous. Winter here makes Iowa's winter look like its 70 degrees and sunny every day.

I have lived in Des Moines and Phoenix and Minneapolis is by far the worst of the 3.

DSM isn't even the best metropolitan area in the state.....The Quad Cities Area is. By far.

When the national news media covered the 1980 caucuses in Iowa they called Des Moines "the best kept secret in the Midwest".

Normally I would agree with you, but since maybe 1/3 of the Quad Cities are in Illinois, and not just any part of an already terrible state, but a prole dumping ground with illogical one-way patterns in their roads, I cannot.

Now, now....it's not snobby....it's called Minnesota Nice, don't cha know. My friend from Lousiana summed it up best...it really means passive aggressive.

As far the weather, there really is very little difference between DesMoines and Minneapolis as far as how cold it gets, it just gets cold and stays cold longer. When I first moved here, the Minnesotans would go on and on about how tough it was going to be. Yah know what? It was no different then living in Iowa, except the length of the cold. It comes about 3 weeks sooner and leaves about 3 weeks later than Des Moines.

The other difference is that Iowans complain about winter and Minnesotans complain if they don't have a good winter.
