Derrick Mitchell, Jr is the 'surprise of the Spring'

According to a very nice article by Chad Leistikow at HawkeyeCentral.com, Greg Davis said that
Derrick Mitchell, the 6-1", 212 lb RB, converted from WR has really shined this spring, for the
Hawkeyes.

That can only be good news for an offense, that last year, desperately needed a
Playmaker.

Good to hear! This coaching staff does a great job of getting the most out of players and putting them into a position where they can succeed. I look forward to seeing him play this fall.

Is he the new Damon Bullock?

I wouldn't mind that, as I think Mitchell could be a Damon Bullock with power and explosiveness (things Bullock lacked). Last year if we brought in Weisman for 3rd and 3, it was a run, and if it was Bullock it was a pass.....we have to be less predictable, and having a guy that is actually a threat running the ball as well as catching the ball would be a great thing.

Dean, I like the sounds of that.....Iowa Hawkeye football-unpredictable....it's kinda catchy.....;)

As indicated by the wink.....that's my point, hell even my neighbor kid can tell what Iowa's doing when they get to the line, and all he wants is something from my 'fridge......

I hope he turns out better than last year's surprise of the spring. I'm sure it's just coincidence they have the same first name. How's Derrick's father's health? Just asking so we don't have a fall surprise, too.

Hilarious! The guy converted from WR to RB. I'm sure if he hits the right hole and doesn't fumble this staff would call it "a surprise".

$1,000,000 - question: "Can he pick up the blitz?" That's criteria #1 for getting on the field in the eyes of der KirkFer and that G.D.G.D.
(#2 is, "Can he hold onto the ball?" A distant #3: "Is he a playmaker?")

Man, oh, man ... the straws that people grasp ...

He must be able to catch the 2 yard out from the RB position and fall forward for another yard. 3 yards is a big deal in the this offense and a nice surprise for the staff. Now they will have to punt on 4th and 1 instead of 4th and 4. Those 3 yards of field position will come in handy with our lock down defense.

So what are you implying? That Willies was not the real deal or that he could not get on the field with better abilities than several players who did see the field? How great would it have been to have CJB throwing to Smith and Willies instead of just Smith right about now.

Call me cynical to a degree as a good story is written as a player's position is changed. The old let's manufacture some good press to keep a player in the fold? Really hope DM turns out to be the real deal but I am in a wait and see mode on this.

It's just hype. I always thought Willies was the real deal, and that's what we were left to believe at the end of Spring football last year. Then, in the Fall - we saw nothing, at least, not much, because he hardly ever played, leaving us all to wonder what the heck, and then, he was gone. I like to looks of Mitchell - he certainly looks the part. But will he end up like Willies, or be the Hawks next 1000 yard rusher? Who knows, I'm just not putting much credence into the whole "surprise of the spring" thing.

Question: Derrick Mitchell was listed on the 2014 roster as a Soph running back, if he is looking good now just 4 months after the bowl game smashdown why didnt this offensive coaching staff run him last season.

I dont get it, was he a receiver last season or a running back. Whatever he was he didnt play as a soph. I thougnt he looked really good at Valley High two weeks ago, what is this coaching staff looking at?

They are good at this, I would point out Dallas Clark as a good example of the coaches putting players in the right spot. He started out as a walk on linebacker.

Nick, please make an honest attempt at a credible argument by using a slightly more relevant example. At least McNutt switched within the last 7 years.
