Depth Chart for Week 1

They aren't playing checkers in practice. I'd say they getting a work out going against our D.
I follow you...and I hope the steel sharpening steel thing is right on too for these guys. Ferguson has been mentioned over the years of being right there. Injuries have followed him everywhere though.

This mid-major killing undersized loudmouth DE Sutton is going to get lit up by a couple of backup OTs. Great, you had a good game vs 4-8 NE, so did everyone. That’s why they were 4-8. You’d be Iowa’s 4th DE.

So, D line is No. IL strength, and we got two newbies at tackle? Aye, yi, yi....hope this isn't an omen

I did a little looking around. Their best units are the lines. Northern Illinois is decent at developing linemen. They have a lot of returning upper classmen starters. Standouts are DE Sutton Smith and LT Max Scharping. Also, RT Jordan Steckler did well at guard last year and is transitioning to the outside.

They don't have a lot of proven talent behind either line though. They are replacing a couple linebackers including Juwan Jackson who transferred to TCU. Corners have experience but aren't particularly talented. On offense the quarterback runs around quite a bit, but there isn't much of a passing game. Even with a running quarterback the running stats were pretty average. The top scorer was the place kicker who graduated.

They were stout against the run last year and kept opponents out of the endzone. This is against MAC competition.

Hope you are correct - how much 'development' can 2 guys make? 13 months ago our OT's were 2 5th yr Sr's, then we play w/ 2 Freshmen and now 2 players farther down the depth chart. But players have come that far that fast before

Ferguson has had plenty of development but has been injury plagued. I have no idea what the ceiling is on his development. (And don't really want to find out.)

I know we have not had much chance to see Mansel play, but judging on the spring game, he just seems to throw a sharper ball than Stanley, which leads to a higher completion percentage. Of course in actual games, this might lead to more interceptions.

Anyway, I really hope Mansel gets a chance for some serious playing time in Hawkeye blowouts wins this year. I want to see how he does in a real game.

This is a very strong lineup, Iowa take control up front, control the clock, and connect on a few big plays. Iowa’s defense will shut out niu.

With Banwart, Kallenberger, and Ferguson starting...3/5 of our starting OL hasn't taken a starters rep in a game. Hmmm. I'm thinking that's a bad thing.
Agree 101% but will beat them.Hawk Players will be up for game. This will not be a boring start of this year's VOYAGE with Cap. D-line again must be super+ and tackles taking full step forward.Has been done in past.Got Reece there. Storylines everywhere no?

Basically Smith has been saying we can't handle his speed and we haven't seen all his new tricks. Said he expects to be double teamed, chipped by fb and rb, but it won't stop him. Real confident guy.

I like his attitude. If nothing more the confidence/cockiness of a player in a leadership position can help get the rest of his teammates motivated. I have absolutely no problem with that attitude going into the season. That said he's a solid player, but will still need to back it up on game day, otherwise it's nothing more than talk.

I saw something from him I think it was last week where he was talking about winning the Heisman.
