Depth Chart for Indiana Game

Defense is banged up. I’m still surprised about Moss, but I guess he’s getting it done in practice.

He had a rough first qrtr but he made improvements by the end of the game. I think that kid belongs.

He's got something that you can't teach...speed. He turns and runs. If you watch, he's in pretty good position, he just needs to recognize when to turn to look for the ball. He was playing the man and playing the strip the arms game when the ball arrives. He was just a little late a few times. The interception in the end zone was text book and it wasn't a bad throw...he turned and went up and got it. I've not seen Ojemudia do that yet. Same thing with Brents on the other side. Twice he high pointed the ball and almost had two INTs himself. Experience...that's all they need. I think Minnesota's receivers are legit too...so there isn't a huge step up anywhere else in the league.

For a first start...pretty damn impressive...3 Interceptions...and some confidence building.

I wonder if we will see a lot of the 5 DB alignments, with Geno Stone being the extra DB. Both to help out the young corners and the depleted LB's.

So Amani Jones will be available in the 2nd half, right?

RM improved as the game went on, which is a good sign. I thought Brents had the better game of the two, though.

It’s remarkable that there is only 6 seniors in the starting lineup. Brincks, Nelson, render and Reynolds, Easley and Ferguson. Of those three I’d say Easley and Brincks might not even be the best players at their positions.

Also, Parker Hesse. It looks really well for next year.

Moss gave up a couple plays and then gets picked on until he turns it around. If he doesn't give up that second early play he doesn't get picked on and has a better looking game from an eye test perspective. I think he'll be fine.

I was thinking the same thing. 10 total seniors, Maybe 4 that are significant contributors, and of those their is at least some depth at the position.

Likely have to add Fant in as a "Senior" in terms of losing players, and depth at O-line might be a challenge, but we should be returning a pretty damn solid squad next year, and potentially a ton of depth.....

Now....beat Indiana and keep the dream alive....

Brents appears to potentially be the next outstanding corner for the Hawks, but I gotta give Moss some props, even on the few early plays the got on him, he was in decent position, and had coverage. The QB/WR simply made great throw-catches. For a true frosh, can't expect a lot more than he showed. He got thrown on...a lot. Can't get a lot more tested than he was, and he passed with flying colors.

Brents, he just looks built for the position. Phil knows what he's doing in that position, wow.

Too early to know, but we sure seem to have some fairly significant depth in the back 4, thanks goodness.

Nothing against the true freshmen at all, but, it's still perplexing to me what happened to Turner and Creamer. The coaches were talking up both those guys going into last fall, and, Turner had a great tape coming in.

Injuries are one thing, but, if both of those guys have lost the confidence of the staff, that's a big red flag at this point in their developments.

As for Ojemudia, I've been posting from day one that he's more of a FS. He doesn't have the right skill set for corner, and is better suited to facing the LOS and playing downhill. It will be interest to see what happens with him, Turner and Creamer in the off-season. You'd have to think that Hankins will get his job back once he's healthy, but, if not, that could get interesting as well.

Minnesota was clearly picking on Moss early. He wasn't turning around to the ball in time but seemed to be keeping with his man. All stuff that could get corrected.

Suddenly Iowa's roster seems really young, especially on defense.

Yep. And with youth comes inconsistency. I still see this team winning the majority of games remaining, but it will be a much wilder ride than was expected at the beginning of the season.

OJ is the best tackling CB on the roster that I have seen. He will continue to have value for our defense in playing the run game. That said the freshman are both better man cover corners. If they can tighten up the zone windows we may just have seen the beginning of the biggest gold mining of the season. Gotta love how Phil Parker can find and prepare towel boys to play in a B1G secondary and excel.

I think we need to start pumping the brakes on any of the Next Great Iowa Corner(TM) stuff until they actually pan out.

See: Rugamba, Manny.

Like @#1DieHardHawk wondered, I too am curious what's going on with Creamer and Turner. I'm especially curious about Creamer, considering he's such an athlete that the coaches were considering him for both sides of the ball.

Fant being listed is comforting, but we all know Kirk likes to keep injuries close to the vest.

I sat behind the Iowa bench on Saturday and didn't see Creamer at all on the sidelines unless he was in street clothes. I was specifically looking for him after I found out 11 & 8 were not starting. Turner was there and looked invested in the game.

After reading KF's comments about Hankins and seeing the depth chart for this week even though both 11 & 8 are healthy enough to play (11 did play on Saturday), I'm starting to wonder if Moss and Brents have simply moved ahead them.

It might very well just be an adjustment needed to fortify the run defense. If we can play man on the outside we can take alot of burden off the LB's in pass coverage. Essentially allowing them to hone in the rush defense skills.

I think we have good talent behind the seniors we are losing, but there will definitely be a leadership void that needs to be filled.

Remember that play were Hesse totally read the screen and had the RB wrapped up just as the ball was arriving? How many plays like that has he made in his career? Who will be the ultra-heady DL next year who can make similar plays?

Yeah, If you were behind the bench you probably also noticed just how tall Brents is. He is huge. I saw him standing next to Hankins and he’s a head taller. He’s taller than Linderbaum by a fair bit, at least a couple of the OL and Hockaday. Brents can tackle too. He gets guys on the ground in a hurry. He made one open field tackle vs WI that was eye popping. I haven’t seen physical tools at CB like his at Iowa in a very long time.
