Demise of HS Football - When Will this Impact P5?

Attended local school game last night (daughter in marching band). Both schools have tradition. Combined 35 straight years of playoffs (one of the team missed 2 of last three). One school 1000 kids and the other 1200.

Only 17 seniors between the 2 teams and about the same juniors. There were 5 starters that were below 5-7 and 140 pounds (not that a small guy can't make it).

Just a pathetic game that looked like JV.

Numbers are falling.

My son’s Junior high used to have an A, B and C 8th grade team. These fed into Valley high school, eventually.

His cross country practices are done about the same time as Football. I started counting helmets as I drive by. I think there may be 30 kids out. Total. Some of which would definitely be on the “C” teams of old.

The Cross country team is loaded, though!

City High freshman used to have 100+, now I think theyre down to 30

This makes sense, why encourage your child to get hurt with an injury that could affect him for the rest of his life. Chances of going to college for free on a scholarship are slim, a career in the NFL minuscule. And consider that the only people who make money off of this don't even suit up or take the risk of serious injury.

If less quality players are available it only makes sense that more and more colleges will drop their teams and funnel the money saved into other venues or sports. Or better yet, funnel the money into raises or other "needed positions." Having less programs will allow the better college teams to have more talented players to recruit.

It makes more sense to have grade school, high school kids learn sports that they can continue for their lives: golf, soccer, etc. They can also learn team bonding, sacrifice, competition, etc. from these other sports that are less dangerous. Yes, I know, soccer can be dangerous.

High school and college football will change, perhaps for the better. Will there be less bowls?

The bell will not toll on high school football until the sport is thrown onto the heap with Roundup, plastic straws, Glutin, Beef, Guns, etc. where resistance becomes futile.

Why is it encouraging your son to get a life-long injury if he plays football?

How will HS and college change for the better?

Will there be less bowls?

When did beef, guns, plastic straws, gluten, and Roundup get outlawed to the trash heap of history?

Are you the borg?

Illinois high school football participation hits 26-year low as other sports grow in popularity. Competitive video gaming could soon join them.

High school football participation in Illinois last year dipped below 40,000 players for the first time since 1993, a sign of the sport’s continuing struggle to attract athletes.

Figures put out by the National Federation of State High School Associations this week show that America’s overall sports participation last year dropped for the first time in three decades. Football led the way: Over the last 12 years, the number of students playing the sport has dipped by 8%.

I loved every minute of football and baseball back when I played it but now that I'm damn near 40 I wish I had played other sports that didn't hurt as much to get out of bed the next day.

My guess is football will continue to be massively popular in the south and poorer regions.

I’d say it’ll effect D-1 eventually, but it should hurt the smaller divisions first. I mean there is still D2 and D-3 to eat through first

As evidenced last week when Grinnell the smallest 3A team in the state came to City High last weekend to "scrimmage" (yeah right...it was a game) City High. Grinnells JV and Freshman scored at will on City High. it was quite obvious the kids from City High were new to football.

The good players will still play. The scrubs that are getting the crap kicked out of them are the ones that aren't going out. P5 will be fine.

The thing thats great about football is allows for all different body types to compete. Big slow kids can play the line where size andstrength is an advantage. Smaller faster kids play the skill positions. Football is the truest team sport there is. When I played HS football there was no offseason workouts required. When my kids played, they were required to attend offseason weight lifting and summer practices to be a member of the team. It is now a huge time commitment to participate. I wish the the athletic boards would put a cap to the time spent in practices.

Eventually I see the popularity of football going down and soccer taking over.Although I would rather watch paint dry than soccer.

My kids never got hurt playing sports. Only got hurt skateboarding

Football is dangerous.

Our family all played football and there were some injuries, but every one would do it again rather than run around in soccer shorts. Damn!
