DeJuan Marrero reaching out to Iowa?

Just saw a tweet where he told Patrick Ingram he's going to talk to coach Dillard later this week. They've been talking on twitter quite a bit lately. Rivals has us as low, but it's nice to see he's still going to talk to us. Gotta be a small chance at least.

This seems to be the conversation between the two:
(Translated best I could)

Marrero: "Congrats bro."

Ingram: "Right on this reporter called me today and asked bout you on one of my questions."

Marrero: "Aww word and yea bro iowa nice man."

Ingram: "On everything it is and our class going in is cool too."

Marrero: "Cool ima hit up coach dillard later in the week."

Marrero: "DM your number bro."

Ingram: "Iiight cool."

Pretty funny if this is the coach who is actually able to get the type of talent out of Indiana that could help us turn the B1G corner after our last two coaches.

Perhaps Bob's Your Uncle will add the CaarHawk Crow Pizza to their menu in your honor.

Ingram made some interesting comments in one of the stories I read. Paraphrasing here, but he basically said the staff + style of play + big ten + commitment via CHA and practice facility + potential sold him on Iowa. Some may not be excited because he didn't have high major offers, but IMO, this kid is a great get for the staff AND he is excited to be a Hawkeye. He went from a recruit to a recruiter in the last 24 hours, which is proof positive that momentum in recruiting is critical.

From what I've seen I like Ingram and think he'll be a great fit for Fran and the program. But I'm even more excited by a couple comments from Van Coleman in the article Jon linked from his homepage piece:

The Physical wing guard has explosive quickness and will add quickness and a player who can flat out break opponents down off the dribble and score at the rim or with the pull-up jumper. He has range to the arc, but needs to work on his consistency from deep to complete his offensive package in the future.

But, it was good enough to freeze the defense in game we watched, at the Adidas Invivtational last month, to let him go off for 34 points while we watched! He also has the quickness to become a lock down type defender in the Big Ten. Look for him to team with Mike Gesell and returnees Devyn Marble and Josh Oglesby to give the Hawkeyes a deep backcourt, even after Gatens & Cartright graduate, starting in the fall of 2012!

Considering that Ingram was playing behind some scorers last year and will now be featured more prominently, expect his PPG to go up. It's very likely he will have a senior season that would have attracted much more attention had he not committed.

Once more:

I have NO CROW to eat. My point from before Fran was offered was that successful coaches were successful in recruiting from the start.

I put the 2012 recruiting class as the drop dead class. If Fran was not able to bring in a class that was close to the top half of the conference, it would take a turn around of which there is no example in recent history.

If you look back at my posts, they are extremely consistent on this matter. The only people who have a problem with it are those who don't believe Fran can accomplish this. Those people use the patience argument.

However, there is NO empirical evidence to support their position and 10 years of evidence to support my position.

CH, I've agreed with you all along that 2012 is the pivotal class for Fran. What's your take so far on that class? What else needs to happen for you to give Fran and staff a passing grade?

I agree that this class has to be good but it doesn't have to be ranked highly, it has to perform highly.

Except for you questioning of the ability to recruit of the assistant coaches.

As I said, it needs to be top half of the conference. However, considering that our conference recruits really well. That is still a tall order.

Lick's second class with Gatens, Tucker, Fuller, Archie, Brommer, and Davis did not cut the mustard because of the last three. One of these guys as a project reach might have been okay, but the three really pulled this class down below B1G standards, particularly for that year. Also, they needed much more to go with the first three, who were good recruits on paper.

Some questions remain: 1) Does Meyer continue to rise? He is very, very close to getting a 4 star rating. A strong senior campaign and he could get bumped up. 2) Does Iowa get Woodbury? 3) Who else does Iowa bring in? 4) Does Pat continue to rise?

I would say, Woodbury and another strong 3 star player would do it. If Meyer got bumped up to four and the other two happened, it would well exceed the necessary levels. If Mayer bumped up to four and Fran found another strong 3, that would probably be borderline. But it would be important not to dilute the class like Lick did with his second class.

CaarHawk:

Did you not have a ginormous rant about the shortcomings of this staff-specifically Dillard-and call for his head until others pointed out that he was the recruiter for Aaron White? A staff that, at the time of your rant, hadn't been in place for 12 months.

I honestly think you could win the lottery tomorrow and be ****** because carrying the bags of money strained your back. I have questioned no pg for this season and the Hubbard debacle, but I am not going to question how hard this staff works to advance Iowa hoops. I am thrilled with Ingram because I think he is a good player AND because he is a gateway recruit to the talented Indiana AAU circuit.

Absolutely. But it is hard to succeed in major conferences without highly ranked classes. The competition night in and night out is just too darn hard.

But I admit I didn't measure actually success, but just recruiting rankings.
