Debunking Selection Sunday Myths

Insightful piece from SI's Seth Davis. This section can bring some hope to Hawkeye fans.

"I won't get into the tiresome debate about the RPI, but I do want to point out that much of the complaining is based on a myth -- namely, that the committee ignores the other valid metrics that are readily available. In fact, every member of the committee is not only free to look at other rankings, they are encouraged to do so. On the NCAA's own internal website, there is a link that reads "Links to Other Sites." Those sites are: NCAA RPI, Polls, Sagarin Ratings, CollegeRPI.com, RPI Ratings, LRMC Rankings, Pomeroy Rankings, Composite Ranking, Conference Monitoring, ESPN BPI. Jeanie Boyd, a veteran NCAA staffer who works closely with the committee from inside the room, told us that she has seen members arrive at selection week with their own rankings that aren't among those listed. Those other metrics are definitely a part of the discussion. If there is a big discrepancy between the rankings, the committee will go into a discussion to probe further into the numbers."

We only hope this is the case. In the meantime may RPI RIP. All of the other metrics including BPI, Sagarin, KenPom, Massey's totals/averages, the Vegas poll should be considered...

please kill the RPI as the only metric and bring all the others into the discussion.

This is going to be really really fun come "Selection Saturday" when they determine who makes the FB playoffs.

Sweet.

I was just checking out the RPI standings on ESPN. It is kind of a joke. Duke a 1 on RPI and Indiana at 9. It appears to almost purely be driven by SOS. Indiana has 6 wins over RPI 1-25 while Duke has 4. One of the biggest problems I have with it that stuck out easily. No other team has 6 wins over teams 1-25, yet they are ranked 9th. Seems off to me.

This is exactly what is going to happen when they come to Iowa, all the other polls are in line but the RPI is way off. I think this is good thing for Iowa, if they take a closer look I think they will like what they see. Why keep a team out of the tournament because a young team played a soft OOC when they have proved that they can play with the top teams in the country?

Rememer last year when we were worried about not making the NIT and Fran's connections got us the home game. If we take care of business and don't **** up i wouldn't worry.
