Deace's Meltdown

first of all, I love the HN Podcast, my favorite of the dozen or so that I subscribe. And Deace has grown on me and I like the guy.

He has some definite points about the officials, especially the head Referee and the side judge being biased. But, what about Witvoet officiating Michigan games?

Or the 0 holding penalties called on OSU. How about in Iowa's 3 losses a grand total of 2 total penalties with 0 holding calls.

Just because we aren't Michigan doesn't mean we should just be happy we compete in the B1G

I don't think he's completely wrong but I also think he was taking it too far and him being a Michigan fan will be the beneficiary of the "blue blood" calls against any other team in the B1G other than OSU. Can you imagine if Michigan were at 1 loss and the Iowa v. Michigan game that happened this year was the last regular season game? Refs would have made damn sure Iowa lost that game and protected Michigan going to the playoff.

Arguing a "systemic" Kennedy level conspiracy dating back to the 70's against: MICHIGAN. That, as they say is RICH.

I have two in laws that are UM grads, both of whom will talk till blue in the face about bad spots, pats on the but, the referees' penchant for red M&M's vs. blue, etc. You won't hear much about the odds of a road team winning at OSU when turning the ball over 3 times, including a pick 6. What I've really noticed is the cult of personality the UM fan base has taken on towards Jim Harbaugh. The followers take their lead from him and his incessant whining and sense of entitlement. It's a bit sick, but there is precedent given the idol worship of Bo Schembechler.

This pretty much nails it. As far as his rant goes , politics aside, I think Deace is a pretty fair in his evaluations and a solid football man. He talks about how the officials were mostly bias towards OSU. I agree with his assumptions. He wonders why certain officials were selected for this game. The answer is clear IMHO, they were selected because their OSU bias was what they wanted with no marching orders required.

Disclaimer: Michigan is the BIG's next favorite team right now. Future changes could be possible.

Peppers got it on media hype alone. His stats aren't close to what Josey's are. Sure he does a lot of different things but for peats sake besides Jewell having like 30 plus more tackles than him he had more passes defensed too. I don't see how returning kicks or playing offense once in awhile should affect the defensive awards given...

that's the thing with biased officiating, you don't notice or care when it helps your side. The reason he can't remember a more biased officiating crew is because his team is usually is usually on the receiving end of Operation:Go Blue.

Honestly, The Big 10 officiating is pretty good when you compare it to other conferences. I wouldn't want a Big 12 or Pac 12 officiating crew anywhere near an Iowa game.

I noticed he wasn't complaining yesterday when Jabril Peppers got named defensive player of the year and Josey Jewell got absolutely screwed in a laughable 2nd team selection

2nd Team? That is odd since I'm pretty sure he's the only B1G linebacker who finished in the top 5 finalists for the Butkus award....

Yep, found it.....

On Monday, it was announced that Jewell was one of five finalists for the prestigious Butkus Award, given to the nation's top college linebacker. He was the lone Big Ten representative on the list.

Exactly... The lack of logic confounds me. Watt is a good player I wouldn't take anything away from him but the other two I would put Jewell over hands down.

I heard Rich Eisen crying about this as well on the Dan Patrick show. He even went as far as to say the bad calls started in the Iowa game:rolleyes: I'd tell Rich that maybe if your team rushes for over 100 yards and doesn't let one player dominate you it wouldn't come down to what he described as a "phantom" face mask call on King. I'd then tell Deace if your team doesn't lose the turnover margin, you likely win the game. I just can't bring myself to have any sympathy for that program. The arrogance coming out of Ann Arbor this year has been eye rolling. I hate OSU as well, so at least one of them got screwed;)

Oh boo hoo. Nobodies crying for Michigan that's for sure. So subtract those 15 yards from the penalty King got. Iowa would have still been in field goal 45ish yard fg range so just keep crying. Hell they should be happy that loss did absolutely nothing to hurt them at the time. It's not till they lose to OSU that the Iowa loss hurts them? Ok whatever. The whole process gives me headaches. I'd say PSU has the biggest gripe of the whole deal but that's just me.

3 words: ROUGHING THE CENTER

I can imagine Deace being upset. Hopefully he has thick skin with the shots he will take on this, since that will be somewhat of a payback for the time his entire radio show was a replay of Sound Off after Iowa lost to Iowa State one year.

I don't think there is any question officials favor some teams over others. It happens in basketball all the time.

I haven't re-watched the game but I have seen some definite bad officiating going on. Some calls that we haven't heard being called like not giving the center his 1 second on a kick etc. Some totally bogus calls.

But this was one of the best pod casts these two have done in a long time.

I like Josey a ton, but what stat books are you guys looking at? As far as the Butkus award that's nothing more than a bunch of people at some foundation with no connection to football. Totally subjective.

Unless you're going strictly on 1. Your opinion (Mitch King fallacy, anyone), or 2. Number of tackles only, second team all Big 10 is right where he'd fit. I get where you're coming from, we all love the kid, but tackles is the only defensive stat category Jewell even comes close to top 10.

How is it that Michigan loses 2 out of their last 3 games and remains in the Top 10? Just proves that the BCS is more of a popularity contest than anything. If Penn St beats Wisky, they should be in the Final 4, not osu. They beat the buckeyes head to head, won the conference outright, osu beat a crappy msu team by one point just two weeks ago where psu beat msu by like 4-5 td's last week.

Is there a more important tangible stat than tackles for a linebacker? He's also intangibly the most important player on that defense. Sure the Butkus award is subjective. I believe Butkus himself and some others that are apart of his group that watch as much football as the media people that voted on it too. The coaches usually have assistants do their voting because they don't sit around watching tape on all these guys other than the week of when they are preparing to play them. You and I probably have seen more of Watt and Peppers than KF and any other HC coach. To say one award is less subjective than another is kinda pointless I think. They all are if your not basing it on tangible stats.

Said it before and I'll say it a million times. No other way to do it than to have an 8 team playoff

-P5 champions all get in. No exceptions.

-3 at large spots spelled out with defined criteria before the season starts.

No one could argue it at all. Your team wants in? Win the respective conference. How much more clear could it be?

I despise the last month and a half of football because all you hear are the talking head imbeciles arguing on ESPN about how Clemson or Washington or Michigan or OSU or Colorado or Penn State or blah blah blah deserves the last spot, to be chosen by the sacred oracles that are the CFP comittee. To make it worse the Illuminati get together in their super secret bat cave and give little teasers every week on who they think is the best right now. All with no reason why or how.

I'm glad you posted this as these were my exact thoughts as well.

Back when Iowa lost to Michigan with really questionable officiating and Witvoet on the crew, Deace didn't have a problem with it then.

And like you reference in Iowa's losses -- I find it really hard to believe that NDSU truly committed only one penalty in 60 minutes of play. That just doesn't add up.

I was pulling for Michigan in the OSU game, and thought some of the calls and no-calls were atrocious. I like how it's a PI on the Michigan defender for wrapping around and not against OSU when it's 3rd down in OT. And he is right, there were at least two holds on Michigan during the Samuels 3rd down run in the 2nd OT.

Having said that, Michigan should be more upset about peeing it down their leg then bad calls. How about you tell your QB not to gift wrap 14 points to OSU by throwing 2 INTS deep in your own territory. How about you not fumble the ball on the snap at the goal line about to score a TD. They had every opp to win it and didn't.

To the poster thinking PSU should be top 4... no, never. I will never root for that program to have any sort of success given their putrid past. I sincerely hope they get shut out of the 4 team playoff. Given the've already lost to Pitt and Michigan -- Michigan should be rated ahead of them.
