Dantonio Spin Factory

“I have been asked about last year’s statement regarding zero tolerance. Zero tolerance means exactly that. We have no tolerance for Chris L. Rucker’s actions. I repeat, I have no tolerance for his actions. He was immediately suspended. He has served his civil punishment, and there are other internal disciplinary measures nobody will know about outside the program. Again, zero tolerance does not mean automatic dismissal."

what?

Just another example of Michigan State being who they are. They will end up with 2 losses in the Big Ten, including Saturday. They're hard wired to screw up at the end of the year. It's not always the same reason, but it is the same result.

Tell me how that is any different than how Ferentz handles discipline? He doesn't tell the media what kinds of internal punishment guys were served, either. He doesn't come out and say "nobody outside the program will know", but nobody outside the program ever knows.

I guess I'm not seeing what the huge deal is here.

Has Kirk Ferentz...scratch that....Has ANY COACH EVER publically said that a game suspension is being left up to the player to decide if he wants to be suspended or not?
Sorry, but missing games because you are in the clink does not count as suspended games.
"Dantonio said the decision on whether to travel to Iowa City for Saturday's game would be left up to Rucker and that he would make that decision today. "

He seriously took his team from sympathetic cinderella feel good story, to a win at all costs villain overnight.

Are you serious? How many players have we had spend 8 days in jail and then have the ability to decide whether or not they want to play 2 days after they got out? This was his second offense in the last year and while he was on probation. He would not be playing this week and would more than likely be off of the team. At 21 years old, these are no longer kids. As a Division 1 athlete he is held to a higher standard than the average college student, as he should be. Yet zero tolerance is nowhere to be found when you need it.

I was only responding to the section that BigTenFan bolded, about the internal punishment. He seemed to be confused by that, and it's hardly unusual for a coach to do THAT.

I just don't care if he plays or not. I'd rather beat them with him on the field. He's their best defensive back.

And BTW, to the guy who talked about him being the one who had the hit on Sandeman, that wasn't Rucker. That was Ware (can't remember his first name), and he graduated.

Michael Rosenberg of the Detroit Free Press wrote a column condemning Dantonio for this move also.
His self-serving statement is an insult to all thinking people. Just come out and say the truth...''this is a big game,he is our best cornerback, and we need him in there to win on saturday.''

I will await the first time the ''Team council'' suspends one of their teammates.
What a joke.
Makes me revise my pecking order for schools I want to go to the Rose Bowl if iowa cannot make it....it was MSU,Wis,then OSU.
Now: Wis,OSU....and pretty much everyone else in the league....then MSU.

of course there's internal punishment, there always is. but to have that be the ONLY punishment is ridiculous. The kid was in jail and he gets to make the call on his own punishment? i don't blame rucker, i blame dantonio for the decision.
