Dale Jones Factor

I think Dale Jones could be a real key to the team this year. Iowa has a nice group of guys but will be just a bit smaller this year with the absence of Olaseni. Iowa also is without White so the key will be with the success of the new wings coming in. I think Dale Jones coming to Iowa from Tyler will be huge to this team as he will bring quality experience with him. Tyler is a very successful junior college and annually ranked quite high.

He has the size & experience where I think he can transition to fill White's void quite well as the others gain experience.

I agee with Melrose..........Dale Jones will be a Positive factor for the Hawkeyes, this year.

Dale has even said that he's working on his "D", and that's fine w/me, I like his confidence when it comes to scoring, so I think he will fit a certain role and contribute, can't wait...

Agree with NEIChawk; Dale is going to be a very good Hawkeye. He's not going to be the best DUNKER in Hawkeye history, like Aaron White, however he has his own Skill set that will benefit the program.

Not expecting much from Jones. We don't have to go very far back to be reminded the transition to D1 ball in a major conference is a big step to take.

From what I read the junior college point guard seemed like a guy that played around to much. Jones sounds like a guy that is giving a lot of effort.

Just because one Juco player wasn't good enough to play his first year at a position where we already had depth doesn't mean all Jucos are going to struggle their first year. Dale is a different player with a different mindset coming in to play a position of need. I think he's going to be pretty good thos year.

I agree, one can't say Dickerson = Dale Jones. That's not fair to either. Not even the same position. Also, every player has different attributes. The statement that he has only played zone at Tyler is true, though. Only zone the past couple years but they are really working on man defense with him.

He has the longest wing span on the team & only 1/2 inch less than what Olaseni had.

This happens to be an article from Hawk Talk Daily we get at the University.

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Offense isn't a question for junior-college transfer Dale Jones heading into his first season with the University of Iowa men's basketball program.

Jones joins the Hawkeyes after three seasons at Tyler (Texas) Junior College. He averaged 9.2 points and 6.1 rebounds as a freshman and 16.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game last season. Jones missed 2014 because of injury.

The 6-foot-7 forward made 99-of-218 attempts from 3-point range and shot 84 percent from the free throw stripe to earn NJCAA honorable mention All-America and first-team all-region honors as a sophomore.

Now in his first season at the Division I level, Jones is turning his complete attention to defense.

"I am not focusing on my offensive ability because I know that's always going to be there," said Jones. "That's going to get me through a lot. I am focusing on my defense and providing an impact on defense.

"I can rebound; I just have to keep guys in front of me. Being the longest guy on the team, I can cause a lot of problems and use that to my advantage."

The challenge for Jones is adjusting to man-to-man defense in Iowa's system.

"Coming in from Tyler JC, we only ran 2-3 and 1-3-1 zones for two years," said Jones. "I wasn't taught many man-to-man concepts. Coach is breaking it down for me and what they need from me -- rebounding, containing shooters.

"It's a lot, but I am focused in and am trying to get better every day."

UI head coach Fran McCaffery likes Jones' potential. Jones has the versatility to play at the small forward position or as a stretch four with his shooting ability.

"He's a long arm scorer who rebounds," said McCaffery of Jones, who has a team-best 7-0 1/2 wing span. "Those are two things you have to love about him. Defensively, he has some improving to do, but with that length, he could be a good defender if he positions himself where he needs to be.

"He's a guy that with minutes is going to put rebounds and points on the board."

After spending three years in the Lone Star State, Jones is happy to get back to his roots. Jones is a Waterloo, Iowa, native who attended Waterloo West High School. He was an all-state selection in 2012.

"I am getting a lot of love here," said Jones. "That's one of the reasons I came back was to give some of the kids back home someone to look up to. I was away for three years, so they've been wondering where I've been. I came back to show them I am back and ready to play."

Jones says he is fitting in well with his new teammates and is working hard to make a seamless transition to Division I basketball.

"Everybody knows what I can bring to this team," said Jones. "I'm starting to get it... once the defense clicks, I will be a great asset to this team."

The Hawkeyes will play the first of two exhibition contests Oct. 29 when they host Sioux Falls at 7 p.m. (CT) on Mediacom Court inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa's regular season opener is Nov. 13 against Gardner-Webb.

Pretty ciol to hear about his wing span. Having longer arms than Uthoff is hard to do.
Agreed. Knowing how much Fran likes length in players, " a team-best 7-0 1/2 wing span" with the skill set Jones has is going to be hard to keep off the floor if he puts in the effort. As Fran said this summer, if Dale shoots well and rebounds, he's going to play. I'm rooting for him to do well this season too because having 2 seniors next season who are deep in the rotation will make the transition after this year's seniors leave a lot easier.

Not expecting much from Jones. We don't have to go very far back to be reminded the transition to D1 ball in a major conference is a big step to take.

And we don't have to go back much further to be reminded of juco big men that did work out. Evans, Hansen, Thomas.

Also don't have to look back too far to see high school players that did and didn't work out.

I doubt there's a difference statistically.

Whether or not a player came from one or the other is irrelevant.

Trey would have likely contributed at Iowa this season, and definitely next. He chose not to work for it. Because he didn't play out of the gate and eventually left due to writing on the wall with Iowa's guards in front of him, doesn't mean he was a complete and total bust, it means MG and Sapp were better at least immediately. That was not a shock to anyone except for people who wanted both guys replaced by a JUCO transfer with no experience at the d1 level and 2 years behind MG and Sapp as far as learning the system.

Appreciate the insight from someone who has never seen the guy play. lol
