D-line

You have absolutely no idea if Heiar is ever going to be able to play football again.
Which may be why he said "just to name a few" and "if we can't find a good combination".

Why did you even bother posting this response?

DL will be a mess next year. Bigach isn't even in the two deeps; not a good sign for him.

We need some JUCO help on the DL or next year is going to be even worse on defense and a major rebuilding year overall.
Players are not static. Generally they improve, and occasionally someone comes out of nowhere when the lightbulb comes on, as they say. I can't see how you can be so definitive in your prediction.

I wonder where Melvin Spears will fit into this picture. I don't think he's been mentioned as a LB or DL here. He looks huge in pictures I've seen and some postulated he may end up on the D-line. Depending on who steps up that could work out nicely.

the good thing is they are not getting 6-5 to 6-7 235 lb kids in and having to get them up to 290-300 lb'ers. we are getting the kids that are already at that weight that just needs to have the rough edges off in time to start, no longer are we getting the 3-4 year projects. as for the D-line, i feel with the players that we are in on, anyone of them looks like the type to play right away, Johnson will probably push for playing time, Davis will get a look at starting next to Cooper, with Alvis emerging he may end up at DE, that's not to bad of a start on the front 4

Yep, looks like he'll be a DE all the way. Everybody seems to be forgetting about McMinn, and Tsopanides(?) might help out too.

if Raymond stays, i see him being a big contributor at DE. McMinn and Tsopanidas are redshirting. the coaches will have a lot of option to work with, they will be young but are alot bigger than the ones we have seen in the past

I would agree with you on the DT, but McMinn and Ott are both that rangy need to put on weight type of kids. We haven't gotten that kind of DE since Clayborn and Ballard. Donovan Johnson and Raymon fit the bill too, but one is gone and not sure what the other will do. Hope Raymon stays, think he'll be a good one.

Be nice if Lohn commits. He already has good size and speed. Aaron Curry would also be a good size coming in as both guys are already 270 lbs.

You need to learn a little something about football.

He is not a good player.

BTW ... teach the coaches while you're trying to inform me. They've been having Bigach in the DL rotation this year ... and Coach K has said plenty of decent things about Bigach during the off-season.

Bigach obviously doesn't yet have much of presence on the field yet. However, I'd be willing to bet that part of that is due to the fact that we've been needing him to play at DE earlier in the season ... and frankly he's arguably a bit better suited to play at DT.

Bigach really hasnt rotated in at all since Iowa State. He didnt play against Pitt at all and got in very late in the game against LMU

Also, Bigach had been seeing reps at DE more prior to the Pitt game ... thus, when Alvis moved over to DE, the back-up roles were already filled by Daniel and Forgy. Thus, it's no surprise that he didn't see reps in the Pitt game.

Lastly, for the record, Bigach has still seen reps in 3 of our 4 games.

Spears is already at DE, and has been there for wks (unless he moved back to LB w/ Davis leaving). I'm more looking at guys like Trinca-Passat and Hardy to start contributing. They've been on campus and part of the program long enough that next year, along w/ Carl Davis, those 3 should factor in the rotation. None of those 3 needed a ton of physical development - I'm sure there were technique issues, but physically they weren't your Karl Klug types. Carl Davis needs to get it together, period. He's got all the opportunity in the world, he just needs to grab the bull by the horns. I think the players that will contribute next season are already on campus - Alvis, Bigach, Davis, Hardy, Trinca-Passat, Spears, Raymon, Cooper and hopefully Tsopanides. Most of those I've listed should be physically ready by next Fall, and hopefully these guys can turn the corner. Players are generally coming in more and more prepared every season, though the occasional projects like McMinn will likely always be part of the program, and it'll be interesting to see his development for next Fall, as I'm sure he'll put on a lot of weight and get significantly stronger. The guys listed above just need to step up and be players.

Serious problem for Iowa on the DL for next year unless some guys come out of nowhere, which does happen from time to time. However, this DL is the worst I can ever remember at Iowa and with the attrition we have had, I am fearful about the quality of the bodies that will be starting next year. REALLY need to find some quality recruits at that position that STAY in school.

3rd quarter against LMU ... the first guy in not named Daniels or Nardo see a down at DT.

The 3rd quarter isn't exactly that late in the game.

Bigach played quite a bit against PSU. Especially when Daniels went out for a while. He has been seeing the field regularly.

I'm guessing it will be like a paper bag trying to hold water.

If these guys are so terrible, than why are we sweating the fact that they are graduating? Let's bring in the next crew and see what they develop into.
