Rick Wulkow, executive director at the Iowa High School Athletic Association said Pollard called him on Wednesday morning about the comment he made to the official.

"Jamie was in the role of a parent supporting the Gilbert team," Wulkow said in an email to the Register. "Jamie has handled this situation as expected, in a very professional matter. He has dealt with the situation appropriately as far as the IHSAA is concerned."

Oh, really, Mr. Wulkow? How did he handle it in a "very professional manner"? How has he dealth with it "appropriately"? Has he apologized to the official? Has he apologized to the schools involved? Has he signed up for anger management classes? Has he agreed to not attend his son's games the rest of the season? Just how has he dealt with it, Mr. Wulkow?

Pollard should have sat in the stands, cheered for his son and his son's team, groaned when they didn't play well, but just kept quiet regarding the officiating. Not one word. Athletic Directors are expected to hold themselves to a higher level when it comes to many matters, including sports, including any sporting event they attend. They are not just "fans."

If anything, Pollard should get a letter of reprimand from the board in control of ISU athletics.

Wulkow's response smacks of protecting a golfing buddy or something.
awesome faux outrage.

Yeah, 1490am and he says he's got something national on yahoo sports radio.

By the way, 1490am barely comes in in Des Moines after about 4pm I think.

FreedComanche

Sounds like one of those little home kits you can get to broadcast in the immediate vicinity of your house, like music to accompany your totes awesome Christmas light display so people driving by can get it on their car radios.

So what happened in 1700? One minute he is there, next he is gone. No info in it at all. Banhammer?

How do I put this delicately...

Let's try this: The guy is a f'n scam artist. I state this based on his "investment" propositions to a few whales I'm acquainted with.

Color me totally unsurprised that his Investment Opportunity(TM) is glorified HAM radio.

I attend a BUNCH of high school games, usually sitting in the visitors sections due to sitting with my wife who is working the games. Some of the things that come out of the mouths of the adults at most games is amazing. There are a few teams that you can almost set a time on the game clock to where the parents will start to get on the officials. Sportsmanship is lost on many.

Had one game this year (a lower level high school game) where the official kicked out the ENTIRE visiting section for getting on the referees. That was certainly interesting to hear the aftermath of that. Unfortunately, I was in the other gym watching a game and missed out on that fun.

The entire Gilbert crowd is prett terrible with the stuff they yell. This story on Pollard is not that surprising.

I think it's freaking hilarious if it was in fact an Iowa fan out to embarrass Clown U. If I ever meet up with that guy I'll buy him a beer. Or ten.

Pollard should be invisible at a high school bball game.

Our society is dog crap. Factoid

That's a little strong. But it is true that increasingly society finds itself on the very fine edge of the line separating civility from anarchy: road rage; flash mobs; Black Friday crowds breaking down doors and trampling each other and store clerks; neighborhood disputes that escalate out of control; public events that dissolve into chaos; lack of a basic sense of civilized behavior, courtesy, fairness. Sporting events are microcosms of societal decline. Google "fight brawl game" and see the thousands of hits that come up, from the professional level down through NCAA, high school, club into the smallest youth. Pop Warner football for kids has a major problem right now with coaches, parents and even players getting out of control and assaulting not only each other but the officials trying to keep order in their games.

Sports officials are there to preserve that line of civility, to allow games to be played aggressively and competitively while maintaining the borders and controls to keep them from spilling over to total chaos, as this basketball game between teams from Baltimore and the nation's capital did. Not comparing Gilbert or what Pollard did to what occurred here, but the bottom line remains. The officials did what they did to try to keep control of the game and its environment, in this case tossing an obnoxious parent. Jamie Pollard should have known better and behaved accordingly.

I could never ref high school games. In addition to my refusal to wear the odious uniform and special needs shoes, the odds of me getting into a fight with some dumb hick fan yelling obscenities at me is somewhere north of 100%.

I refuse to believe that. Your objective and reasonable discussions of posts and issues here have demonstrated you have an inner compass and a strong ability to deal with competing personalities and to resolve issues fairly and amicably.

Strangely I do just as you have described in my professional life. Outside of that all bets are off.

The applicable word, I believe, is "compartmentalization."

Well stated... And you kind of made my point for me ;). Sounded pretty dog crappy to me and you didn't hit on about 100 more examples I could give you about our civilized societies warped values.
