Cyclones Drop Big 12s

With all the excitement today for Iowa some may not have seen this. ISU goes 2-4 in finals and Ok State sneak past for the win. Not sure on the exact final score. Reader got upset by Marble, Big Z upset Rosholt, and Varner beat Brester 5-2. I wonder how long it will take the fans to throw their coach and team under the bus for this one...

Already happening in a Big 5 meet thread at CF...

As somebody from CF posted...

"Disappointing but at least ISU is wrestling in a conference tournament with some real competition unlike Iowa and the little ten. ISU will need to step it up next at the Nationals. The thing is like a demolition derby, you never know who will get beat (remember Caldwell's win?) They might have a chance but have to really want it, they didn't today."

Right.

McDonough beat the 5th ranked wrestler nationally to get to the finals and will face the #2 ranked wrestler there.

Dennis beat the #2 ranked wrestler and a former National Champ and will wrestle the #1 ranked wrestler.

Metcalf is the best wrestler in the sport.

Jaybo beat #19.

Keddy beat #9.

So he can beat Varner or Z for ISU? I think you mean he is the best at his weight, but actually he is top 2 as the previous poster pointed out.

I think it would be funny to see him wrestle Z, i think as long as he wasnt under him he would be fine. Z couldnt stall his way into ot with him.

When the 149 qtr. were going, the #1, #2, #3 nationally rated wrestlers were all wrestling then. Both Big 5 and Big 11 have a lot of highly ranked guys. Clones fans just have the wrong optometrist and are a little myopic, nearsighted, etc.

1st point: The Clones are jealous of the Hawks...which is why the make ridiculous comments.

2nd point (and more interesting): Let's take a "Big 10 all star team" vs. a "Big 12 (aka Big 5) All start team" from this year.

125: Big 10 wins easily
133: Big 10 wins
141: Not sure...probably Big 5
149: Big 10 (Metcalf)
157: Big 5
165: Big 10 (Howe beats Reader or Marable)
174: Big 10 (J. Bo)
184: Big 10 (Durgo)
197: Big 5 (Varner)
Hwt: Big 5 (Z or Roscholt)

Tally it up...and then talk trash about the big 10's competition.

lol i love the ppl who can't accept he is the best wrestler and say oh he can't beat varner etc.

its ppl like this that need to stay away from this forum or wrestling in general...head over to iapreps.com

I did this too quickly...

141: I'll generously give the Big 5 a win...even though Humphrey probably beats Oklahoma's Bailey

157: I was way wrong on this one...a healthy Dustin Schlatter wins in a land slide....then Cyler Sanderson (PSU), Kinser (IU)...the finally a Big 5 wrestler at #11 (Erisman)

So the Big 5 maybe wins 3 of 10....

You love the people who can't accept it? He is one of the best wrestler but the obvious best? Hard to say that we he didn't win a title last year. But you aren't biased...are you?

There will never be a clear-cut "best" unless they are the same weight. You can't really compare a 149 and 197 pound wrestler head to head because they can never wrestle. But what you can do it compare results...metcalf has dominated all year. He has gotten bonus points in almost all of his matches, pinned a bunch, and has had almost no competition at his weight.

I am not suggesting Brent could beat Varner. It comes down to how you dominate and Metcalf has been the most dominant wrestler in the nation for the past three years, collectively. He will likely be a two time NCAA Champ, three time finalist in his three years of competition, probly 50 pins, a Hodge Award, and he lost to one person, whom he also rolled in the All Star meet early last year.

Varner is a good wrestler...a great winner. But for much of his career, he was hardly a dominant wrestler in matches...he won, but you always felt he could do so much more.

I do have to give Varner credit, he has opened up more this year than years past. He used to just take wins, this year he is going for extra, but not the way metcalf does. I dont think you will ever see Varner put on a takedown clinic to get a technical fall.
