Cully vs NW (Good and Bad)

storminspank

Justin VanLaere
Good:
6 assists, 2 turnovers
4 big rebounds
37 minutes of controlling the game
Handled the press very well

Bad:
FT shooting
Jump passes
Some ill-advised shots and passes

Overall, very happy with Cully tonight. Would have loved to see him knock down those FTs, but played composed tonight.

Not sure if they mentioned this on TV, but Cully hurt his elbow in the previous game and it was very sore. He could hardly even bend it prior to the game. I believe that affected his free throw shooting.

Cully is going to go down as a fan favorite just because of the way the kid battles. He has been sick, his elbow hurts, his back isn't any better but he comes out and gives us his all. Cully isn't the quickest or has the prettiest shot but the kid is a freshman who is learning on the job and doing a darn good job. Many others want a PG to be recruited but I like Cully because he wants to be a Hawkeye and he gives his all and all short, white guys like me someone to live through for a few hours every week. I'm even thinking that if we have another child and it's a boy I just might name the little one Cully.

I don't mind them either.

I am kind of neutral on the jump pass. I can see how it can get you into trouble, but sometimes it creates some good open shots for others. Cully does have a knack of hanging in the air and twisting and contorting to find the open man. And then again, he can turn it over too. Solid tough game out of him tonight.

LOL the jump passes. My god...how many times were those right on the money?

He played fine. And he is ALWAYS going to jump pass. Might as well get used to it.

I don't like the jump pass either. Not in the way Cully seems to use it, anyway. It shouldn't be a stock move, it should be more of a secret weapon, you know? Defenders shouldn't be able to key on something like that - that makes it way to easy to pick off/block.

That said, I really like Cully, and think his upside is tremendous.

I have never been as upset by the jump passes as others,it seems. If he gets it there,I do not care how...

now, after reading about how his back stiffens after every game, and has to wear a brace the rest of his career and how that bone will never heal...how can anyone in their right mind question the need for another solid pure pg on our roster next year?
If Cully goes down next year, we have another year of hell...are fans crazy?
I mean we have 13 schollys...why not a have a solid backup at every position...why be three deep at all other positions but have only on real pg on this team?

Wisky has 2-3 pgs on every team. So does OSU,MSU and all the good teams...but Iowa is supposed to go naked with just one injured pg because we are afraid of offending that injured pg by getting a good backup? Nuts.

cully played well, but I think his shooting is affected by his back/elbow/ankle...and whatever other body part is hurting right now.

I fully expected that we would lose Cully to injury this second half of the league season..hope not...but frosh always get hurt, especially pgs...so far, he is hanging tough...gotta love his heart..way to go Cully!!

Thats my point though. How many times does the jump pass actually get picked off?

After he got incredibly lucky in the later part of the game where he jump passed it through a NW player to Cole who got the And 1 (which was a 5 point swing btw because it should have been a NW dunk) Gatens went up to him, said stop it, and walked away. A few jump passes can work, but every pass was turning into one at the end of the game.

It's not the usage of the jump pass that bugs me. It's the overusage and/or when it's used on the baseline or cross court. Those bug me. Jump passes have their place, just have to have their correct place.

agree 100%

CP's biggest issue is his inability to hit free throws.

A point guard going 2-7 from the FT line? unheard of.

Stop looking at the ball when you are shooting it and start concentrating on the rim. Anyone else notice.

Part of this is his size. NW is long out front on that 2-2-1 half court press as well as their 1-3-1 zone they run. He HAS to jump to get it over them.

Again...what were his TO stats? (I don't know) Seems to me if its not a TO then its a good pass. This is coming from a guy who probably was despised by the PG's that played for him.

What have been two of the most spirited debates about Iowa basketball revolved around this year?

1) Lil Lick's playing time
2) Cully Paynes freaking jump passes

LOL

How many threads have been devoted to the jump pass? We had about a 100 post one 2 weeks ago.

Kenyon talked about NW's length and so did some others on here before the game. I guess I've never really noticed NW's length. Juice isn't that tall, Nash has some time, but I wouldn't say he's tall. Their backcourt isn't incredibly tall or athletic. Shurna has good size and so does Coble. I guess what I am saying is I've always heard about NW's length/size, but I've never noticed it in the games or watching them play. Fuller was stuffed by Shurna and Cully got a jump pass taken away - those are the only two plays I can think of.

What Iowa struggles with is the fierce on ball pressure - a la Minnesota.

Gatens looks at the ball, too. He is decent at FTs.

I do not remember Cully looking that bad at the FT line this season. I have to think his injured elbow had something to do with it. With that being said, I would have tried to in bounds the ball to somebody else.

I think they are long when they trap in that zone with Nash (6'4'' good jumper)Shurna (6'8'' good jumper) and Crawford(6'5'' good jumper)...but I agree that last nite they did not really look as aggressive in that trap, and that rendered them just average. When you add Coble to a wing, they really get long when they trap...but for some reason, they did not even employ that defense til later last nite.
