Cubs sign Bob Howry

Didn't want to waste a new thread on this...but good eye Fontenot! Nobody watches strike 3 like the Cubs, with runners in scoring position...

Pretty good article from a blog I read pretty regularly on the state of the team, and the division.

Pay particular attention to the part about how any team can get beat 11-2, but it takes a special kind of talent to constantly drop low scoring games.

If he is coming straight into the big leaugue team, then who goes down? If it's anybody other than Grabow this is ridiculous (It's still ridiculous no matter what).

Thats a good point, farmer. It can't be Stevens since he hasn't been with the team for 10 days yet, but Grabow would be a good guess. Howry can't be any worse.

Still, the signing of Howry is an attempt by the Cubs to fix a problem that doesn't exist. The bullpen is not the problem on this team. Key players refusing to contribute offensively is the problem.

Berg going down. Patton designated for assignment. Agreed that Howry doesn't address the problems the team has.

Jackson was always a starter up until a couple weeks ago. I haven't heard what the reasoning was behind that move. Cashner was a closer at TCU, and the Cubs have converted him to a starter. He's definitely our top pitching prospect. In other minor league news, Josh Vitters is hitting real well since being promoted to AA.
In the minors ... (from Muskat Ramblings)

Andrew Cashner threw seven shutout innings, giving up two hits and striking out seven, to help Iowa beat Colorado Springs, 1-0, on Saturday. Cashner retired the first 13 batters he faced and only three reached base (two hits, one hit batter). The seven innings were a career high. He did not walk a batter. The Cubs' No. 1 Draft pick in 2008, Cashner now has a 0.95 ERA in three Triple-A starts.

What she fails to mention is that the Cubs have 6 pitchers in a 5-man rotation.

No, just reporting what Cashner is up to (and it was a nice short story). I don't think Cashner will move up until the starting rotation is paired down or resolved in some way. I am not in favor of moving pitchers up too fast. He needs work in the minors.

There was similar blurb about him in the Register this morning, but made mention of the Cubs having plans to advance him through to the next level as soon as he was ready.

One start at AAA doesn't make him ready, but there is only one next step. To advance through to AAA ball in 2 years is pretty impressive.

It's a good problem to have.
