Cubs-Reds today

The Cubs are carrying on the tradition of struggling against rookie pitchers. Today, they are facing rookie Mike Leake who has never pitched in the minor leagues. He was the Reds #1 pick last June and pitched for Arizona State last year.

The Cubs loaded the bases in the 1st inning with 0 outs and did not score. In the 3rd, Theriot and Fukudome led off with singles and the Cubs did not score. Theriot just walked to lead off the 5th.

Some things are just familiar. :)
 
Theriot and Fukudome are the only ones who are seeing the ball well againt Leake. Gorzellany looks real solid.
 
Cubs lead 1-0! Gorzellany has hit the ball hard twice, but nothing to show for it. The Cubs starting pitching has been tremendous this year with the exception of Z's first start. We need to find a setup guy though, I think we have in Marshall, but Lou won't put him there for some reason.
 
Not a bad start for Leake in his MLB debut:

4 H
1 ER (so far)
7 BB (Cubs did not take advantage)
5 K

Hopefully the Cubs can win this one and end the trip at 3-3.
 
1st and 2nd, 1 out in the Reds 7th inning. Lou goes to the mound, but decides to leave Gorzelanny in. Here's an important time in the game.
 
Um, well, uh, nice play by Soriano to keep the run from scoring ...

Of course, catching it would have been better. Wow.
 
Tough play on Cairo's ball that Marshall knocked down. Reds tie the game. Then Marshall strikes out Jay Bruce. If Marshall can get out of this tied at 1, it will be a great job.
 
And ... the Cubs lose and go 2-4 on the trip. The bullpen struggled again, but the offense only got 1 run. Home Opener tomorrow at Wrigley.

Tough loss today, another wasted outing by the starting pitcher. I do feel really good about their rotation though, that's the lone bright spot from the first week. Bullpen is just awful. The lineup still struggles with timely hitting in key situations. Ugh

I wasn't able to watch the game, and was unaware that had happened until Pat said it in the 8th inning? How does that happen? Did Ramirez just get anxious and swing at the first thing he saw and hit a pop up? Any contact at all in that situation will get the run in, especially that early.

I know the popular thing to do right now is to bag on the relievers, but at some point the offense has to hit.

Not all of it. Marmol has looked good when given the chance, and Marshall has yet to allow a baserunner. The kid who came in after Caridad (Russell, I think) pitched two innings in the opener without giving up a hit, yet somehow hadn't been used since then.

Grabow is quickly approaching Heilman/Howry status, where the only time to use him is in blowouts where there isn't any pressure.

But the Cubs are hardly the only team with bullpen problems; look what just happened at the end of the Cards/Brewers game.

Ramirez had an 0-1 count on him when he popped out to 2B. He may have been a bit anxious with a pitcher making his MLB debut and the bases were loaded with none out. Byrd is 2-15 with both hits being a HR. Theriot is hitting .174, Ramirez .130, and Soto .091 among others. The offense is struggling to put hits together.

Let's see what some home cooking can do. The Brewers had to play until just now and have to be in Chicago for a day game tomorrow. Maybe they will be a bit sleepy. :)

If anything, the pitcing lines up in Chicago's favor, or at least it should. The Brewers are sending Doug Davis out there tomrrow, and for whatever reason, he has always given the Cubs problems.

Cubs have Dempster, Wells, and Zambrano.

You are right about the pitching, especially if the Brewers try to get Suppan back in the rotation this week. :)
 
ESPN MLB schedule has Suppan vs. Silva (Clash of the Titans!). I am sure it may be Gallardo, but the Cards lit him up after he signed his big contract. Let's hope the offense wakes up at Wrigley.
 
we need more than lee,theriot,and fucudome to hit the ball, what has happened to soto so much promise then flat, and i like the outfield situation with the back ups thats nice. lil mike has been a nice surprise.
