@hagertony
free agents are out there and actually 142 to be exact. nady and ramirez are the only cubs on that list.

a few notes already pat listach is to be named the bench coach which isnt good for our boy sandberg. Robinson Chirinos has been added and cubs don't know where they want to put soto.

lets go get pujols!

let the offseason chat begin

who do you think the cubs should go after??

I'd love to see Adrian Gonzalez in Cub's uniform. But that is going to require a trade (Padres still say maybe) and who do we give up? I thinkit's going to be Dunn unfortunately. The cubs need a lead off hitter, not sure who that will be either, but I honestly don't see much money getting spent. maybe Dunn and done.

Kind of hard since he isn't a FA, and no way in hell the Cards would trade him to the Cubs.

I hope they don't get Dunn, it'd turn out to be another wasted contract.
Couple names out there that intrigue me are Jason Werth and Aubrey Huff. Huff mainly just as a fill in for a year or two until we develop or can sign a long time slugging 1st Baseman. I had a friend suggest once we try Soriano at first, interesting suggestion and not sure if we need him touching the ball anymore than he has too but who knows. Carl Crawford would intrigue me too but I have a feeling he will be overpriced.

Now, to dream a little, I'd sign Jeter or Rivera to come bring a winning attitude into the Clubhouse. I'd put Jeter at 2B. Rivera the closer with Marmol, Marshall and Cashner 7th and 8th inning guys. We'd essentially be making every game a 6 inning game with that pen. But..... the Yanks will not let either one of these guys go.

As we saw with the Giants though, great pitching can go a long ways and that is where you start with your offseason plans.

The Cubs won't sign an outfielder, they already have too many so Worth and Crawford both of who would be too expensive anyway won't happen. Rivera not a chance. Marmol is good, and the cubs will wnat to resign him when he is an FA, if they **** him off by making him the setup man again he'll be gone. good closers are tough to come by. Jeter is going to be expensive and we already have DeWitt, Baker and Barney at 2B. The cubs need a 1B.

Dun would not be a "wasted contact". He's only 31 and we wouldn't sign him to more than a 3 or 4 year deal with a club option. He's a very undervalued player offensively and he's been remarkably consistent. His HR and RBI totals since 04 have been....

46-102
40-101
40-92
40-106
40-100
40-100
38-105 (playing home games in a pitchers park)
38-103 (palying home games in a pitchers park)

He's got a lifetime OPS of .902 (thats 60 pts higher than Rammy). People like to knock him because he strikes out some, which to be fair he does, but they forget he also draws a TON of walks and sports a lifetime on base percentage above .380.

He's also left handed which is what the cubs desparately need.

One thing to bear in mind is the cubs hired Q to be the manager which might indicate they aren't going to be aggressive in the FA market this year and instead go with a young squad in the hopes to make a run in a few years.

I understand your take here, he's got pop and all. I think Dunn is more suited for DH and there has to be a reason he's floated around teams and no one other than the Nats wanted him a couple years ago? If we didn't have Sorry-ano, I'd be more for it but in the NL I lean towards not having two big defensive liabilities on the field at once, not to mention Castro had 23-27 errors which hopefully he improves upon but might not and having Dunn at 1st might just increase his errors. Our track record with veteran free agent signings hasn't been great so maybe its the lifelong Cub fan in me that just expects it would fail too :) You are right on with the Q observation, I think the Cubs focus the next year or two is development, shedding a few contracts and getting more athletic so FA talk could be moot point anyway.

It was just a dream I said - those two Yanks. :rolleyes: Yes, no OF for us unless we shed Fuku's contract and are content with Soriano on the bench or at another position. I was thinking also Werth had played a little 1B before but I may be mistaken. I'm not real big on the whole left/right hitter thing. If a guy can hit (especially in the clutch Mr. Renteria) he can hit no matter which way he bats.

Can any of you guys see us signing Wood again? Intriguing. Also saw Berkman on the list, yes he's old and near the end but if he was a cheap one year contract for a fill in at 1B could have one more decent year in him. With Adrian G. and Fielder both available next year, not sure it makes a lot of sense to lock up anyone at 1B long term this year??? Just an observation.

Trade for Grienke? sign Aubrey Huff? :D

I've heard some Grienke rumblings but would be shocked if the Royals dealt him just because he is the only thing they have drawing fans right now.
Anyone heard how Brandon Webb is progressing? I saw his name on there and its intriguing too. If he has a similar type of sinker he had before his injury, he'd fit good in Wrigley Field being a ground ball pitcher.

The only way Hendry has money to play with is by unloading a contract or two - with Fuk's and Z's the most likely. However, Z has said he would invoke his no trade rights as he wants to remain with the cubs.

I do think Fukodome gets moved, with the Cubs picking up all but $5 million or so. Could see Wood returning, depending on the price. I'd venture a guess the Cubs will kick the tires on Adrian Gonzalez, but won't make a play for him. Dunn would be more likely. However, I wouldn't mind throwing Colvin at 1st or signing a 1 year stop gap until Adrian G. hits free agency in 2012. Ramirez' contract will be off the books, as would Fukodome's. Depending on other needs and payroll, that money could be reallocated to Gonzalez.

However, I think the Cubs will stay relatively quiet this offseason. I don't anticipate any big moves, unless it's Dunn.

thanks for the post woody saw it coming after that hire
Agreed, pin. It will be interesting to see where he surfaces. 4 years in the minors and he was named PCL manager of the year. He wants an MLB opportunity. At age 51, he can see the clock ticking. Let's see what happens.
