CUBS: Kid-K Kerry Wood Retiring

Lot's of us saw this comming. It's pretty obvious he's been frustrated by his ability to perform up to his standards.

It's too bad he never lived up to his full potential. His throwing style was so violent early on that he was doomed to end up this way. He was amazing though in the late 90's and up to around 2004.

Except for, you know that whole blown elbow he had in 1999 and missed the entire year.

From what I can remember, he had one year as a starter that he was completely healthy and that was in 2003. Him and Prior were filthy that year.

Hell, anymore you're probably not considered a good pitcher unless you've had Tommy John surgery.

That 20 strikeout day was the nastiest **** Ive ever seen from a pitcher in baseball

Agreed, I've heard many people say that was the most dominating performance by a pitcher ever in baseball.

His rookie year he had 12.9 SO per 9 innings. That's just unheard of by a starting pitcher.

For reference Nolan Ryan never got above 11.5.

2004 Cubs rotation -

Wood
Prior
Zambrano
Clement
Maddux

I thought for sure that team was going to run through the rest of the NL. Instead they made like one rotation where all five started in a row.

Borderline play at 3B in like the 2nd inning cost him a no-hitter. Would have been a tough error given to Kevin Orie and Im guessing he would have gotten an error if it had happened in the 7th or 8th instead of early in the game.

That was the most dominant performance I have ever watched. More so than either of Clemens 20 K games.

Agreed. They actually finished with a better record in 2004 than they did in 2003 but missed the playoffs. Blew some games to the Mets at the end of the season the same weekend Drew Tate almost got his face ripped off in Ann Arbor.

That team also made the trade for Nomar right before the deadline.

If I remember right they needed to win two games out of their last six or seven to make the playoffs and the failed to do so. That was a tough end to the season.

Probably not a hall of famer but a great cub and one that gave us solid memories and some false hope

Ive pretty much just bought into the fact the Cubs will never make the World Series after the Bartman game. Not blaming Bartman, just the fact the Cubs had Prior absolutely dealing with a 3 run lead and 6 outs to get and just f'n blew it.

At one time he had HOF stuff but he spent nearly half of his career on the DL. He is a great Cub though and I assume he will remain some sort of ambassador for the Cubs going forward.

2003 - Wood leads the league in strikeouts, K/9, Hits/9 and HBP. I can't imagine having to hit against him that year. :)

Good luck, Kid K.
