Here is a tally of cross over games for the next 4 years, a total of 12 games.
Penn State - 4 games
Michigan - 2 games
Michigan State - 1 game
Ohio State - 1 game
Rutgers - 2 games
Maryland - 1 game
Indiana - 1 game

That's a lot of games against Penn State. I don't really have a problem with it although it does seem to skew the schedule quite a bit. The series has been a blast over the years and made for some darn good TV viewing. My suspicion is the networks have had a hand in this arrangement.

Iowa is 4-1 against Michigan in the post Loyd Carr era. Let's keep it going.

Scheduling one regular season game against Michigan State in six years is a travesty. In my opinion this is one of the most underrated rivalries in college football.

Only one game against Ohio State. In fact there has only been one other game against them since 2010. This is a reflection of Iowa not doing so well since 2009 and historically having a poor record against Ohio State even when Iowa has been good.

Rutgers - 2 games Apparently the two teems have never met.

Maryland - 1 game We have already played them the last two years.

Indiana - 1 game Iowa has played them quite a bit. Indiana usually manages to keep it interesting but Iowa usually wins.

I am hoping that another good season will get Iowa a slightly harder schedule and more match-ups against Michigan State. I would like Iowa to be playing either Michigan or Michigan State each year. I like the series with Penn State but four consecutive games might be a bit unbalanced.

I might as well add the year-by-year.

2016
Rutgers - 4th game
Penn State - 9th game
Michigan - 10th game

2017
Penn State - 5th game
Michigan State - 6th game
Ohio State - 9th game

2018
Indiana - 6th game
Maryland -7th game
Penn State - 8th game

2019
Rutgers - 2nd game ?
Michigan - 5th game
Penn State - 6th game

2016 schedule looks favorable although the Penn State and Michigan games come late in the season when their new quarterbacks have some experience.

2017 looks to be more challenging with Penn State and Michigan State games coming early for a new Iowa quarterback. Ohio State is always a challenge.

Agree. We'll just have to keep meeting them in the B1G Champ Game...

Well just having a name program on the schedule seems to shut the pundits up, even if they aren't good at the time.

Next year with Penn St, Michigan, Nebraska and Wisconsin will instantly make the schedule appear stronger.

Penn St is who Iowa got because of Parity scheduling.

Every team in BigTen is matched up with 1 cross-division team they play all 4 years from 2016-2019.

The other cross-division matchups that play each other in all 4 years are

1. Ohio St - Nebraska
2. MICH - Wisc
3. Penn St - Iowa
4. MSU - NW
5. MD - Minn
6. Rut - ILL
7. Indy - Purdue

As for the other 6 teams in the other division, they will play each other 2 times in 6 years from 2016-2021.

Thanks, I remembered the "parity" scheduling. bit I didn't remember exactly how the rules were applied.

In all fairness, this scheme helps Iowa and MSU a little too much. Nebraska and Northwestern are chronically overmatched in their crossovers.

I like the fact we get Penn St. 4 years in a row. We have had very good success vs them under KF, and they make Iowa schedule tougher getting a traditional power on it each year.

.

That's because the BigTen never did officially explain parity scheduling. It was not until the 9-game conference schedules were released for 2016-2019, that fans had a chance to study the new cross-over schedules and figure it out on their own. The Big Ten has been strangely secretive about the whole thing.

If you ranked teams on relative strength, loosely based on a six year record. ( Loosely based since not all the teams have been in the league six years)

East
Ohio State
Michigan State
Michigan
Penn State
Rutgers
Maryland
Indiana

West
Wisconsin
Nebraska
Iowa
Northwestern
Minnesota
Illinois
Purdue

Mixed - Relative strength
Ohio State
Michigan State, Wisconsin
Michigan, Iowa
Penn State
Northwestern, Rutgers?, Maryland?
Minnesota
Indiana
Illinois
Purdue

The Big Ten brass is all about maintaining the illusion of trasparency when they are usually anything but transparent.

I agree, just for the simple fact that the two teams are so much alike with pretty much the same philosophy. Always a hard hitting barn burner.

Good thread! Was not aware of how the schedules were put together. I have a good friend who is a huge PSU fan so we will both be happy to attend games in Iowa City and Happy Valley.
