Crean made a really awful decision end of 1st half

OK, I'm finally getting around to watching the replay on ESPN3.com

What is Tom Crean thinking by sitting Jordan Hulls at the 3:30 mark in the first half? Iowa just turned it it over and was down 6. Hawkeyes had 2 FGs and 7 TOs in the last 5 min or so.

Why do you take out the guy who is hitting EVERYTHING in sight? With the way Iowa was playing at that point, Indiana could have been up 10-12 pts if he would have kept Hulls in there instead of Jones (who was just coming off an injury).

And I there cant be an explanation that he needed a rest. Its D-1 college BB, kids can play 40 min a game.

What an awful awful decision by Tom Crean. Didn't bring him back in until 30 sec to go. Dumb.

Agreed. The kid was on fire at that point. I couldn't believe it when Crean took him out. They had their foot on Iowa's neck at that point; another couple treys and Iowa would have had a much steeper hill to climb to simply get back even.

Really poor decision.

Crean is an overrated coach. He is one D-Wade away from being fired at Marquette and coaching somewhere small.

I seem to remember a lot of posters wanting to see Crean in Iowa City after Alford was fired. Glad that didn't work out.

I'm watchin the replay as well. The play where Iowa stole the ball and got it out in front to Cartwright for a layup(plus one) was big time. He literally slowed down to wait on contact from the Indiana player and then just used that contact to propel himself forward for the layup. I mean that was an NBA play.

I thought we were getting a pretty good player in Cartwright. But I was not expecting what we are seeing. He is playing great.

Loved that play. He used great body control to stay upright and get the easy layup as well as the foul. Heady play.

I've said it in other threads too - Cartwright is this team's MVP without a doubt.

Cartwright has evolved more than any player within a season I can remember. He is looking more and more like Andre Woolridge everyday, just less bulky. But his drives, passing, and leadership skills are all getting nearly as good.
Wish Cartwright was only a freshman! All-Big Ten PG is not out of the question, and I never seen that coming.

Agree with you 100 percent.

Maybe it's because I was a former point guard. I don't know. But I really think there is a correlation between a team's point guard, and how much fun it is to watch that team play.

And just think, Cartwright wasn't even on our radar until later. It seemed like we missed out recruiting last season...and yet our "fallback" commit has taken over this team.

Earlier in the year I mentioned how Iowa was missing a leader and how it would make sense to be Gatens, but that is just not his thing. Cole? He tried... and it just didn't stick. Cartwright has stepped up and the rest of the team is reacting well. Cartwright has become the leader teams like Michigan State even lack. Well done! Basabe is so dang confident and has such an upside... I am loving the players that Fran is bringing into the program.

If you have been to a game this year (I was at the MSU game), you will see that Cole is still the leader of this team. Cartwright may be playing the best, and Basabe is doing great as well, but if you watch the bench and the interaction of the players, Cole is the player who the others follow. When he was out of the game, he is standing (the refs had to tell him to sit a few times) and helping other players.

I don't think Cole's role as leader can be underestimated. He has been through a lot and stuck it out. He doesn't complain, and he doesn't pout, he just plays hard.

On the floor, there is no doubt that Cartwright is the leader of this team. It's become pretty evident the last few games. But overall I think Cole is the main leader of this team. And that's the way it should be. He's the lone senior in a bunch of young kids.

I hope people keep this in mind when assessing McCaffery's next couple of classes. They aren't going to rank very high on paper, but if he can find and develop on or two like Cartwright and Basabe every year we will be in great shape.

Cole has been pretty feisty this year.

He's a nice dude, but he isn't letting anyone be pushed around.

Exactly. And yet he's the first one who gets in front of an Iowa player who has just been fouled hard to make sure there's no retaliation and to keep things under control.

I noticed the same thing. I just did not get it.

Everything points towards the fan base really being behind Crean, is that so?

Towards the ends of the game Crean showed as much panic as a head coach ever has in any sport. It makes me nervous watching his antics.

The timeout they called at the end of the game....and did not run the play correctly forcing another timeout.... absolute panic mode from Indiana and it comes straight from the top.

Tom Crean is Indiana's George Raveling. Great recruiter, terrible bench coach. Anybody remember when Raveling would pull players just as they were getting hot?

This. Cole's not the best player, but he's still the leader of the team. He's the heart and soul, without the dominant production, if that makes any sense. He sets the tone with his experience, hustle, and fire. There are more ways to be a leader than to see yourself at the top of the scoresheet.

If Crean had taken over right after Knight, I'd be worried. Because next thing you know, Indiana would get their Tom Davis.......

But, they had Mike Davis first, so we don't have to worry about deja vu :D

Crean has some really nice recruits coming to Indiana in the next few years. I think this is a big reason for their patience.
