Craig wasn't on anybody's radar during his first three years on the wrestling team at Davenport High School back in the mid-1950s.

That's because Craig didn't wrestle a single varsity match until his senior season.

Once in the lineup, Craig made up for lost time in a big hurry. And he's given back far more to the sport than he ever could have dreamed.

This weekend, Craig will be inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame, part of the Class of 2012. The induction ceremony is Friday night at the Coralville Marriott Hotel and Convention Center.

"It's quite an honor. Looking at the potential inductees in the future years makes it an even greater honor," Craig said. "It's something you don't think about until you get in. You just go out there, do your best and hope that makes you a winner."

"I didn't wrestle a single match my sophomore year because I couldn't beat a single person ahead of me," Craig recalled. "My junior year I wrestled three reserve matches because I couldn't beat the senior ahead of me."

That didn't stop Craig from becoming one of the early greats in the history of the Iowa wrestling program.

"That was one of the greatest experiences of my life," Craig said. "I was very fortunate to win a national championship."

This weekend, Craig will take his place in the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame. It may be an honor overdue, but it is one that is certainly deserving.

"When I got the call that I was selected, in a way it was a relief, but also a surprise," Craig said. "It's very exciting. My wife and all three of our children are going to be there at the induction. I am really looking forward to the whole event."
