Could James Butler Take Medical Redshirt?

It sounds like his injury is more severe than previously thought. He has already missed a bunch of games and will not be back for Northwestern. So it's fair to wonder if Butler and the Hawks might be better off if he takes a medical redshirt and comes back next year to be a starter with a TON of experience. Even at 100% health this year, Butler didn't get many touches, as he is a backup to the best RB we've had under Ferentz. I think it would be a huge "recruit" to have a guy like Butler be the man next year...something better than bringing in a 5 star true freshmen RB.

It all depends on the rules as he is a Grad transfer. Maybe Grad transfers do not have redshirt chances and only one year to play. It also depends on how many qtrs he was suited up for and ready to play and if they clear him to play later those games will count toward playing time I think.

Grad transfers still have their 5 years to play 4. Quarrels had 2 years left when he stepped on campus - 1 redshirt year and 2 playing years at his last school.
James graduated in 3 years - playing in all 3. He was hurt in Iowa's 3rd game. If he doesn't play again this year, he will have played in 25% of Iowa's games (not including the bowl). He should fit in for the letter of the law as far as playing time goes.

Yeah, he would be a no brainer like Vandeberg was last year. Played as a true freshman and only played in 3 games this year, so still has a redshirt year as long as he doesn't play the rest of the year.

IKM will be the man next year, I believe. I loved to have JB back, as well. If the injury is more severe than thought, causing him to miss a lot more games, I could see him coming back.
