Cougill or Van Deest

Do you ever watch a game? Hope that's not too harsh. While he was "sick" he played 24 minutes against Iowa State and played very well. Also, the sickness has lasted over two weeks now if that's what it is. I think the kid is going to be a fine player here over his career but it won't be because of his quickness.

I believe they said he has a pinched nerve that has been limiting him - so being out for a week with the flu and additional time with a pinched nerve is not unreasonable.

Like others who posted this earlier...... I also cannot believe that this coaching staff did not offer Van Deest a scholly? How nice would our future look with both Cougill and Van Deest on the front line being joined by Larson next year.

This year we could have gone big at times with both on the floor or moving Cole back to power forward since he is way undersized for the post.

Yes May is a nice player but we have all kinds of players at his height and his position.

That's my beef with this staff..... unwillingness to value big men.

Van Deest grew up in Iowa City's backyard and a Hawk fan from what I thought I read and Lick does not recruit him ? If Lick does not make it he can only blame himself with a number of blunders.

Lickliter did recruit him, but when it was time to offer there weren't any free scholarships. I'm sure if Lickliter was aware that players were going to leave before the signing period, the offer would have gone out. But when it was time to sign, Iowa had no scholarships to give. Lickliter did recruit Van Deest, though.

I guess a lot of people missed on him than - because he wasn't getting much interest from anybody. He averaged 10pts a game as a SR in HS and only had offers from Indiana State and U of Wisc-Mil.

Exactly my point... a blunder.... find a scholorship. We offered 6'7" Archie a scholarship??? It was not like Van Deest came out of no where as a Senior. He was known as a developing prospect as a Junior. If Lick had the nerve to ask Freeman about transferring I could think of a couple on the current roster he could have done the same thing to.

My point is he could have found a scholly if he really believed in Van Deest's ability to help his program.

I talked to a high school coach prior to his Senior year from the Des Moines area who sat there and told me how good he thought Van Deest was and could be.

How many 6'10" to 7' footers come along with athletic ability ? It wasn't like he was a slow footed dummy in high school.

Opportunity lost....

I am not disputing you - just think you are being unreasonable to Lick on this. The guy had 2 offers from middle of road MVC schools and 1 offer from a middle of road Horizon league school. So every Big Ten and Big 12 school missed on him - as well as every other MVC, Mid-American, Horizon school. This is just limiting it to midwest schools....

Van Deest. I thought he was the best big man on the floor last night. He had a few great post moves and caused trouble all night. Drake was going to him on the block late in the game when they hit 9 3's in the first half alone. His post moves were impressive. Needs to get stronger obviously.

Cougill, on the other hand, needs to get quicker asap. The bigs in the big ten are going to beat him down the floor all night and get easy buckets that we can't afford. This team really has no other options, its not pretty.
