cornfield

hogs are great, my 4-H hogs paid for my first car.

Although here in North Carolina, they always refer to tobacco road, but how often have you actually seen a tobacco shot during a game?

I was down in NC the last 2 years at NC State. Lots of hogs in NC too. Gotta love 'em. They paid for my education, car, etc. Not 4-H pigs though. Lots of market hogs. Where is Youngsville?

Never mind Youngsville, where were YOU in NC?

little hick town north of Raleigh - I work in Raleigh

NC used to lead the nation in Hog production until Hurricane Floyd came through. Three counties on the east coast had huge factory farms.

Tks, Scotty, I already knew this; I was just wondering where HawkFarmer lived when he was down here.
BTW, if you're interested in seeing the Hawkeye b-ball team in person, they're playing @ Wake Forest on Nov 30th (a Tuesday).
There is another poster on here, HawkTransplant, who lives in Winston-Salem, and we are going to try to meet up for the game. If you're interested, PM me. :)

Here's another stat that goes along with that though...

Total land area in Iowa (acres): 35,747,594
Total farmland area in Iowa (acres): 30,747,550
Percentage of farmland: 86.0%

(2007 data)

Can you tell me what website you got that off of? Just wanna see what other states like Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, and Indiana are. I'm sure Iowa probably has the most farmland still % wise but just would be interesting to see how we compare.

It was just a quick google search...I think this one though:

Iowa Fact Sheet: IA agriculture income population food education employment unemployment federal funds farms top commodities exports counties financial indicators poverty farm income Rural Nonmetro Urban Metropolitan America USDA organic Census of Ag

Again I'm not saying i don't like to see cornfields, I could really care less but I wouldn't mind seeing some of the Iowa campus and cutaways to places in Iowa City.

Actually, NC has never been #1 in hog production. They do have the most sows, but not the most finishing pigs. Iowa has led in that for some time. I lived in Raleigh, went to NC State.

I realize that they could have been, but due to the moratorium they could never expand, and I'm sure Wendell Murphy, the Browns and Prestage would have loved to expand. That's why they made Prestage-Stoecker in Iowa. Ship wean pigs from NC to Iowa for finishing, so they could have more sows, but not need to deal with the moratorium.

I know the hurricane did a lot of damage, but it didn't hurt hog production, just moved it in land to Duplin and Sampson county. If it weren't for the moratorium, NC would be #1. But they don't have the corn supply. We are talking corn that is $1/bushel more over the basis. Ridiculous. The pigs are pretty populated in those central counties, which also explains the disease issues.

most informative post of the day!!

Ya, corn crops suck here by comparison. I have also seen many empty hog lots - I figured they were abandoned after the hurricane flooded the lagoons - not the best place to put them (near the coast)
