Cooper and Davis

I know Carl Davis was dinged up and expected to play next week, but anyone know the deal with Cooper. I thought he was having a pretty good camp and Kirk mentioned he had flashed in practice. Are they still trying to keep the redshirt available on him?

After watching Alvis yesterday, he could definitely play the DE position also on the front line. The guy is active. Wasn't impressed with the backups to the starting four. I'm seriously hoping Davis and Cooper are a step up...which I believe they are. And they are space eaters also.

Im very excited for Carl Davis, I think he may be the most talented D-Line player on the roster.

Based upon what evidence?

From what little I've seen of Davis, his pad level is terrible and he gets very little push, despite his size. His technique also is questionable.

I think people want to see him play because he's big, and bigger certainly isn't always better. Most Iowa D-Lines under Ferentz would support this notion.

That sounds like criticism of his technique not his talent. He's raw, and he was even rawer last year, but he has the size, strength, athleticism to be very good. He seems to work pretty hard too. So, with him it's how long with it take to "click". I'd prefer to have a big, strong, athletic guy at DT. Someone who can force the QB out of the pocket and pug up the center in the run game. I suspect Avris is better suited for DE than DT, but is the better player at DT until Davis pull's it together. Love Avris's game just want him at his best position(suspect we may need him at DE in 2012 too).

why isn't alvis suited for DT? very similar to Klug, and he didn't turn out so bad. i think Alvis will be a great dt - great combination of quickness, strength and motor.

If he is good enough, then he'll be on the field. Again, I ask the question...what evidence have we seen of his talent?

I am the first guy to criticize people hyping up players before they have shown it on the field. AND Davis will be the FIRST highly rated DT recruit to even stay on the roster during KF's entire tenure.

Seriously, NOT ONE has completed his eligibilty let alone made an impact on the field.

That being said, the reports from camp are that Davis may in fact buck the trend.

Also, Alvis could turn into Klug, but he might also end up sliding outside if Davis and another inside guy develop (kind of like Ballard sliding back outside for Mike.)

Hmmm...I've heard both Norm and KF mention Davis as making strides and showing promise. I'll take their word for it. But I'm sure you know your stuff too.

Yeah I don’t get it…….

I hope they are a step up and I believe they are…..based on what!? And honestly unless you are playing nose tackle in a 3-4 bigger is most assuredly not better even in the NFL.

I’ve re-watched the game and paused, reversed extra multiple times now. Bigach showed very good flashes and quickness, he also got ate up a few times, like Davis does because he plays high. Gags got off on the snap almost as fast as Daniels does which is saying something. However he needs game reps, but if you plugged him in with 3 first teamers I expect he would perform well enuff and better every game.

Now they are the 7th and 8th guys from what I can see. Nardo is 5th and was very good and pushed the pocket well and disengaged well. Very, very solid and Forgy is very strong and played good as well. He also disengaged and flowed back to the ball well and keep in mind these guys well get better by the game. All quite athletic.

Now as for Cooper and Davis....... the phenomenon that is the clamor for someone untested on the basis that they are surely better because some "service" said they were continues to seem strange to me.

Your right....that is what they said. But they didn't say anything more than that. The rest you implied. Not once have they indicated they were better than anyone else......or even doing anything more than getting better and in the "equation"!

Davis, is a redshirt freshman who came into the program expected to get a redshirt and missed the first game with an injury. So, I've seen no evidence of his talent except what the coaches have told us. Dominic, has a year on Carl. He wasn't on the team two-deep last year. A year longer of S&C and technique work for him over Carl. I'm not sure Carl will beat out Dominic for the starting job at DT this year, but preferably it's likely that the coaches want a big DT(and that's why they recruited a 6' 5" 310 pounder for it, and 280 pound Cooper last year, and 290 pound Jaleel Johnson this.)but, Iowa traditionally has struggled to recruit big DT's with the skill set to play the position. They are far from a dime a dozen. So, obviously, with King, Kroul, and Klug they've effectively bulked up guys over the course of their careers to play the position and play it well, but 255 pounds is not the optimal size for it. Playing light DT's has been done out of necessity not preference. If Davis can refine his technique I suspect he'll be an eventual starter at DT.

Alvis WAS on the depth chart last year and he recorded stats until he got injured.

That, even though the depth chart included three senior draft picks and 3 Jr's with NFL potential.

Serious dude, just stop.

We all hope Davis continues to develop. But stop belittling the guys that are already contributing.

Pretty much will say that about anyone if asked. Not to dismiss them saying that about Davis, but what would you expect them to say about someone on their team?

The staff DOES NOT blow false smoke up players butts! The reports have been fairly consistent.

We have one group who seems to indicate that they think the guys on the field haven't earned their playing time, and another group who seem to think the coaches are lying.

interesting no mention of hardy in this thread. hardy and davis both were 3 star players out of hs according to rivals, had similar offer lists and yet hardy seems to get lost in the wash relative to fan speak.

i have faith that the staff will play the best selection of players they have on the team and our DL will improve and be really good as the season progresses. I don't believe that has ever not been the case.

The Iowa coaches have put far too many DL players in the NFL for any fan to doubt them at this time. I trust the coaching staff.
