But then they would have drawn Miami and a who's who of NFL talent, even by their standards. Willis McGahee, Clinton Portis, Ed Reed, Jeremy Schokey, Devin Hester, Jonathon Vilma, etc.

Had it worked out a certain way, USC vs Miami would have been a saucy matchup. Two NFL loaded teams who seldom play each other.
That Miami team was loaded, no doubt, but still lost to an OSU team I'm positive we could have taken.

I think it had more to do with the fact that USC was also red hot, and KF hadn't fully realized his bowl prep strategy, which he changed the next year.

I think USC and Miami were easily the 2 best teams that year. USC was just a terrible matchup for the Hawks. I think Iowa was easily the 3rd best team in the nation.

Iowa was loaded too.

Think Iowa still suffered from adjusting to real speed. Iowa teams today seem faster in the interior.

That bowl was about routine/prep. Yes, U$C had more "team speed", but the Hawks had plenty of their own.

We weren't prepared for the heat/humidity (that's still a problem in Miami in December, at night), and the whole "routine" that week was loose/relaxed.

Since you brought me into it.
Would you agree most conferences have a few really good teams? These upper few teams are going to compete for conference titles.........well like we do in wrestling.
How many coaches, schools haven't won a conf title in wrestling in 15 years!?
But we are on the rise. Looking at who we have and who's coming in, I think we will be right in the thick of it. We could very well be in a position to over take Wisconsin as the one to beat in the west. We are close, we are hopeful. The opportunity is there.

Well I certainly hope you are right. Compete with Wisky and WIN a division title on a regular basis would be great. Then I would be satisfied . Wisconsin certainly isn’t Alabama and there is no reason we shouldn’t be able to win as many division titles as they do. We all know that hasn’t been happening.

So when the term “Kirk is Building” is used then it can touch a nerve. What makes people think after twenty years things are going to change to the point that we can finally start winning division titles? When we have to scratch and fight like hell just to beat the Purdue’s, Northwestern’s, and Wisconsin’s who were generally in the lower tier of the Big Ten conference, then I think it is time for concern.

If the recruiting is picking up after twenty years then I hope it shows itself in results. Then I will feel better about the situation. For now it’s just talk as I see the typical three star recruits roll in. I just don’t see the changes in recruiting that some of you are claiming. We should be well past the rebuild stage and be at the RELOAD stage. Wisconsin doesn’t seem to have this problem.

Anthony Nelson and Amani Hooker...and all of the recruits that have definitely taken notice.

This is hypothetically true, but Iowa has been putting guys in the NFL for years, and I’ve seen no reflection of this in recruiting, or really in better records besides 2015.

How in the F did this go from Connor McLaughlin to stabbing arguments about winning or not winning, mediocre schedules.....don't you crackheads have a yard to mow? Or a wife or sick kid that needs you about? GTFO and get something done today or change your hatred of Iowa and say something constructive. Good Lord. Oh and Happy Father's day tomorrow

Its called a message board, this is the way they’ve been for 20 years.

I'm not sure if anyone has told you this, but Wisconsin is pretty much a top 10 program lately. You think it's easy for Iowa to be a top 10 program? Wisconsin is breaking the odds right now, and it won't last long. We were breaking the odds in the 80s. We were breaking the odds in the early 2000s. We will eventually break the odds again. Iowa will never be a blue blood who maintains being a top 10 program forever. Neither is Wisconsin.

Kirks done building. Kirk is maintaining 8-4 and has been for 12-15 years. The older I get the more I appreciate 8-4. Could they do better with someone else? Maybe, but probably not and I don’t trust Barta to ever make a hire, so 8-4 it is and it’s not the worst thing in the world.

I live in Florida (regrettably) and I’ve seen Florida trip over their feet with musschamp and mcilwain, and saw Florida state go 7-5 and 5-7 with a checked out jimbo fisher and with willie Taggart in way over his head. I saw the once great Miami turn into an also ran with sanctions, al Golden, randy Shannon and mark richt.

Sometimes 8-4 is not the worst. Kirk can do 8-4

I also don't believe for a second that BigD would be satisfied with winning divisions on a regular basis. We would just see a lot of posts saying that settling for division titles is for losers and fans who don't demand more (whatever that means) are losers too. Also the division titles would be fools gold because our schedule.

Agreed, sir. It's all relative. Sure, we may be recruiting better, but other teams are, too. I still think we lack difference makers on offense. That's what good offensive coaches go for. We go for role players.
