Congrats to UNI

Iowa will lose at LEAST three more and won't make The tournament. So "Mid Major" all you want. At least you should get to see the hawkeyes at home in the post season for an NIT home game.

Yeah, I can't wait to see that 1st round NIT game against the New Jersey Institute of Technology; or Incarnate Word. After those last two complete and utter debacles (Minnesota and NW) added to the seeming "Let's get this season over with" mindset, and the NIT will most certainly be in the picture. And if your honest, that possibility can't ignored...

Are you talking about the WCC or the MVC? Either way teams don't control who is in their conference. The good coaches recruit to their conference and gain national attention by controlling what they can control. Ben has done that in spades. Loyola scares me to death tomorrow. Evansville at home we should be ok. Then we will have WSU vs UNI ..... dang I can't wait.

You can't wait to feel the shocker? Enjoy the beatdown. You will probably lose to them in the tourney too. Better enjoy your ranking while you have it.

Some of us have sour grapes towards UNI. Respect the program. They have a .633 winning percentage over past 10 years (not counting this year) vs our .539 winning percentage over the same time period. We are a whopping 5-5 versus them since 2005. They have 4 NCAA appearances (4-2 record) since 2005 with a Sweet 16 appearance, and 2 Conf tourney championships and a regular season championship (not counting this year). We have 3 NCAA appearances (0-3) record with 1 conference tourney championship. And they have done this on a fraction of a budget and we have a SIGNIFICANT recruiting advantage due to facilities and elite conference.

Am I jealous, d#*@ straight. I first thought, let them enjoy their once in a lifetime great season, but looking into the last 10 years, it looks like they have enjoyed a heck of a lot more success than us. Remember the 80s, when they were Div II and we were a top 10 program. That seems forever ago and they are much closer to our 80s glory days than we are.

We can only hope their coach is sucked up by a power 5 conference school and we can start feeling better about ourselves and our team. I am not holding my breath.

And the records (as well as the cited conference championships) have nothing to do with the fact that B1G > MVC, right?

I'm not jealous of UNI's success this year, I'm happy for them (barring Fairfax's trolls here). However, it's a by-product of their conference. Look at any ratings scale you wish to choose. This year, outside of UNI and Wichita St, no other school has a good rating. In fact, by their RPI rating half of the MVC is lower than the lowest B1G school. The average RPI of the B1G is 66; the average RPI of the MVC is 153.5.

UNI's remaining schedule with the RPI of their opponent: Loyola Chicago (124), Bradley (282), Evansville (117) and Wichita St (18). With UNI having an RPI of 22, the schedule looks like 3 wins and a toss-up.

Iowa's remaining schedule with the RPI of their opponent: Rutgers (131), Nebraska (110), Illinois (42), Penn St (93), Indiana (29), Northwestern (143). With Iowa having an RPI of 55 that looks like 4 wins and 2 losses.

One other curious fact: UNI's RPI has gone down as their conference season has progressed even though they have been winning.

It's all relative right? A BoneG team should have BoneG talent and an MVC team should have MVC talent, thereby leveling the playing field in terms of comparison. It should be the same level of difficulty for UNI to win the MVC/go to the NCAA as it is for Iowa to win the BoneG/go to the NCAA tourney, there are actually inherent advantages to Iowa's situation that make it all the more laughable that UNI is head and shoulders the better program.

To a point, yes. But overall, no. Over the last 10 years (and longer, actually) you aren't going to see many B1G teams that have an RPI of less than 150 or so. You'll see many MVC teams with and RPI over 200. The top teams for each conference in that time frame are rarely close. This year, they do happen to be within shouting distance.

And as I pointed out in another thread, it's only this year and one other year in the history of the two that "UNI is head and shoulders the better program". Typically it's the other way around... more than likely that will be next year. Or do you think that UNI will easily replace Buss, Mitchell, Singleton and Tuttle? (I don't) There are only 4 players on UNI that are 6'7" or taller; 2 are graduating and 2 haven't played at all this year.

Either way teams don't control who is in their conference.

True...but it doesn't make teams any more ready for the heavyweights of the NCAA Tournament either. Playing in a competitive league makes it harder to get a bid but it sure does help get a team ready if they manage to make it.

You are making a guess about Iowa...uneducated I might add. I stated a fact about UNI.

To me it is very simple, we have made it to the big dance only 3 times in the last 10 years and never won a single game. I don't care that the BiG10 is more respected and has a higher RPI. UNI has made it 4 times and has had 2 wins.

I'm happy to see the success of UNI, I really am, but they are vastly overrated and the numbers don't lie. They have beaten ONE top 50 school and that was Wichita State, at home. The only top 50 team Wichita State has beaten this year has been Tulsa, at home...currently ranked at 48th. In other words, neither team has beaten anyone of substance this entire season. Yes that includes beating Iowa on a neutral court.

UNI's SoS is currently 165th. Remember last year when Iowa was blasted for having such a weak and pathetic non conference schedule? Well guess what, their non conference SoS was 183rd. In other words, Iowa played as bad of a non conference schedule last year than UNI has this ENTIRE year. UNI's schedule is really that bad.

UNI is going to end up with something like a 4 seed and probably play an AQ school. After that it would be a matchup likely against a 5 seed. Current 5 seeds are the likes of Maryland, Baylor, and even North Carolina....easily better opponents than UNI has faced the entire season. Good luck with that.

It is pretty easy to make the dance in 3 out of 10 years when only a few teams ever have a shot to win the conference. Even Fran can make the NCAA tourney by winning the 1 bid conferences. Throw UNI in the big ten and they would struggle more often than not.

If UNI loses at Wichita State and loses to anyone in the MVC Tournament (including Wichita State) they will likely be in the 7 to 10 range with their seed. With their SOS I think they have to win out to get a 4.

The fact that we are debating whether or not Iowa is as good of a program as UNI tells you all you need to know about Iowa basketball right now. Clearly UNI can and will have some great seasons, but year in and year out should not be a better program than a Power 5 school with the resources of Iowa. Yet they have been in recent history.

UNI plays at a lower level of competition than the University of Iowa. Its a lot easier to recruit to UNI than Iowa because of who they play. Iowa was really poor before Fran came, but that had to do with the athletic directors and coaching hires than the University. The guy that fired Davis, Barta, Lickliter, and Alford are only four guys in the history of the university. Alford isn't doing very well this year at UCLA at least by UCLA standards.

Here's a serious question:

At the end of the regular season, how many NCAA tournament teams will UNI have beaten?

If Iowa gets in 3. Iowa, Wichita St, Stephen F Austin.
Same amount as Iowa; UNC, Ohio St., & Maryland

That's pretty sad for a "4 seed"

The announcer for the Iowa game tonight said that whoever plays UNI in the first or possibly the second round better not take them lightly. I guess he didn't expect UNI to go very far in the tournament.

I am thinking we will go a little farther than iowa.

Predict what seed UNI will get in the tournament and how far they will go.

I predict a 4/5 seed for UNI (They will have 4 losses going into selection Sunday). They will probably lose in the first round ala Drake in their "magical" year, but I could see them winning one game, but that is the ceiling for this team. What say you Fairfax?

Iowa will get a 10 seed in the NCAA tournament, and win 1 game.

So basically they will have identical years. Iowa would probably lose 4 games playing UNI's powder puff schedule playing in the MVC. UNI would lose probably 12 or 13 games playing Iowa's schedule and would end up a 10/11 seed.
