Conference Expansion

Saw Jon Miller reply to a tweet about Conference Expansion today. Some Michigan fan claiming it's going to happen soon.

When/if the day comes to add a couple more teams (and you were forced to choose), who would you add?

Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, Notre Dame???
 
Texas is a no go because of their Network. Out of this list I would say Oklahoma is the gimme, but will we lose the Nebby black Friday game? After that I would say either Kansas or ND, flip a coin.

Adding Oklahoma would guarantee we lost the Black Friday game. It would make sense to me to add a team like Virginia (close to Maryland but still expanding South) but that would not be good for football. Kansas would be fun for basketball and give us another win for football but that would be bad for the BIG football strength and really what do you gain from adding the state of Kansas?

Bball eyeballs and that's about it. Ratings wise, ND all the way.

Kansas? There are only two schools the B1G will accept. The B1G will accept Notre Dame & Texas. Those two have the demographics to increase TV sets & the B1G footprint. Remember, basketball is pocket change compared to football. Kansas & Oklahoma just don't have the demographics.
 
Stupid. Add any more teams, you basically have two conferences.

I'd boot any one of the last three additions and let ND in.

If the B1G had to boot any school, it would be Iowa. It would never happen, but given a choice between the NYC, D.C. & the Des Moines TV markets it's a no brainer. Rutgers & Maryland are going to line Iowa's pockets with money. Iowa is very fortunate to be in the Big Ten. Booting Iowa for Notre Dame would be far more lucrative to the conference than booting any of the three additions.
 
The play will be for Virginia and NC, if NC says no then probably Ga. Tech. What would be interesting is if NC requires Duke does the B1G take Va., NC, Duke & ND or Ga. Tech? If Va., NC & Duke left don't see how ND could decline the handwriting is on the wall for the ACC because Va. Tech, NC St., Clemson & FSU would be gone soon and with the new playoff ND isn't going to have a path for the playoffs. cSome question whether they have much of a path now.
 
Personally I would prefer to see ND and Pitt. I always thought they should have added Pitt when Penn St joined but it made too much geographical and rivalry sense. Plus a very strong academic institution.

But of course it's all about the dollars.

Right, Pitt doesn't give you any more viewers. I'm honestly not sure what ND brings that we don't already have. I know they are a national brand but could the BTN get into new states simply because of ND? Or is it just advertising money they would bring?
 
Well, it was just announced the BigTen is adding Notre Dame in hockey.

This is a minor move in terms of the money sports, but it is a shift in philosophy of the BigTen towards Notre Dame. Before the BigTen told Notre Dame it's all or nothing. Either you put all your sports in the BigTen or none of them. The BigTen adding Notre Dame in hockey represents a thaw in this thinking.

But in the end Notre Dame is pretty much stuck with the ACC with all its other sports at least until 2025.
 
Oklahoma has to bring their little brother(Okie St.) along......I thought they had to be a package deal.

They would never boot Iowa because we're a long-standing traditional member of the B1G and we have an avid albeit, not huge fan base. If they had a do-over, they'd boot Rutgers because I don't think anyone in New York cares about Rutgers sports.

Bringing in Notre Dame would be the dream of all dreams because of their following. They get NDU to come in, pick anyone else and I'm good with that.
 
As far as Iowa's fan base goes, it's the same way to the B1G as Wichita St, Gonzaga or Butler is the NCAA basketball. Not huge in numbers but avid, respected and important.

Yeah, but all the B1G schools have NY metro alumni associations. The BTT heads to D.C. next year & MSG the following year. D.C is the seventh largest TV market & New York is the largest. Together, there are over 9.8 million TV homes in the two markets. The Des Moines-Ames TV market has 426,240 TV homes. The Cedar Rapids-Waterloo-Iowa City-Dubuque market has 336,040 TV homes.

A 2011 New York Times study showed Rutgers as the #1 most popular college football team in the New York tv market. Notre Dame was #2. That validates the Rutgers decision (based on money and not athletic prowess.) Also, Penn State was #3, UM #5 and OSU #9.

Also in the article, OSU, UM and PSU are 1, 2 and 3 largest (estimated) college football fans and Notre Dame is #4. Top tv markets for Notre Dame are: New York, Chicago, Boston, South Bend, Philly, Los Angeles, Washington, Indy, St. Louis and Detroit.

Again, this is all from 2011 and from just one article, but the above, combined with the below would tell me Notre Dame and Virginia would be the picks. Notre Dame would be a cash cow and UVA huge for academics and overall prestige of the conference.

In the top 10 largest alumni bases:

10. Northwestern.
8. Virginia
4. Michigan
1. Penn State

Wealthiest alumni bases:

15. Michigan
13. Northwestern
11. Virginia

Uh, how can a school with the smallest enrollment in the Big Ten have the tenth largest alumni base in the country?
