A 2011 New York Times study showed Rutgers as the #1 most popular college football team in the New York tv market. Notre Dame was #2. That validates the Rutgers decision (based on money and not athletic prowess.) Also, Penn State was #3, UM #5 and OSU #9.
Also in the article, OSU, UM and PSU are 1, 2 and 3 largest (estimated) college football fans and Notre Dame is #4. Top tv markets for Notre Dame are: New York, Chicago, Boston, South Bend, Philly, Los Angeles, Washington, Indy, St. Louis and Detroit.
Again, this is all from 2011 and from just one article, but the above, combined with the below would tell me Notre Dame and Virginia would be the picks. Notre Dame would be a cash cow and UVA huge for academics and overall prestige of the conference.
