Conference Expansion

Sorry to burst your bubbles but OU to the BIG won't happen. OU and OSU are a package deal. There is no way in hell OSU would be approved to get into the BIG, unless we want to throw out standards altogether and then all bets are off. Can't see this happening. According to some folks at BIG HQ the leading candidates are TX, ND, GT, and VA...in no particular order.

With all the noise Oklahoma has been making over the last couple years, I'd bet that they would leave without Okie St.

I think so too, and there is no question it's being floated out there. The Big 12 is so dysfunctional. There was talk of them adding teams over the past week, but then you hear Texas really doesn't want to. I mean who can they add that would bring them BIG or SEC money? And then Texas mouth piece Chip Brown says OK. and TX are a package deal. The whole thing is messy. It was even suggested that TX, OK, KU, and ND would come to the BIG. Of course there are a lot of crazy rumors out there, I doubt many of them are true. I do think either the ACC or the Big 12 will be gone in the next 10 years when all of the grant of rights expire...and the Big 12 tends to make themselves an easy target.

The Big12 is stuck really. If they expand, the cost of sharing the pie with 2 more teams isn't made up by new monies coming it. Sure they get a Big12 title game, but it is a net loss to each team money wise to add 2 more teams. Plus I'd bet dollars to cents that both Texas and OU are seriously looking at what moving to another conference will bring them as well.

They would be stupid not to look. If they came to the BIG they could most likely bring in double what they can make in the Big 12. Not sure what kind of money they could make in the SEC and Pac 12. The problem with Texas is they like to be top dog. But for that kind of money, I'm sure they could figure out how to be equals.

Why are you so positive that OU and OSU are a package deal? Is this a gentleman's agreement or is it a secret contract that we're unaware of?

I don't think you quite understand the gravity of the decisions that will have to be made. At some point schools are going to look after themselves if it means their institution is set for the long haul.

Okie could still set up non-con games in football and basketball with OSU like Iowa does with ISU to keep a relationship going. I could see Okie leaving the B12 at some point.

Notre Dame is the obvious choice for one team expansion. They already have many historic rivalries in the conference for football it just makes the most sense. Especially when they look at the money that football will make the rest of the sports really don't matter anything else is just gravy. I would like to see Virginia as well or maybe Pitt if two teams are added`.

I would stay away from North Carolina especially with the investigation going on. I still have my fingers crossed that something major will happen to them.

The SEC would likely take them if the B1G makes a move the SEC will have to try and counter they are not going to stay put with 14 teams.

Why couldn't the whole country restructure the conferences to created balanced prestige, recruiting grounds and revenue for all involved?

If they were going to split the revenue evenly regardless like the NFL, then sure, but it still would probably hurt recruiting for us.

I'm a firm believer that over the next 5-10 years there will be 4 conferences with 16 teams each. It makes too much sense not to happen. One team from each conference goes to the 4 team playoff. No need for some stupid ESPN hour long rankings show every week...win the conference and you enter the playoffs. Maybe eventually you can add 2-4 wild cards to the playoffs to "spice up the drama" (puke)

If 1 conference has to dissolve, it will be either the Big 12 or the ACC. The Big 12 seems to be the most volatile and dysfunctional right now, which is probably why they're desperately reaching for questionable teams to join their conference (Houston? UCF?). If they can expand to 12 teams then at least they possibly fight off extinction a bit longer.

I'd be happy if the B1G took a team like Kansas (KC market is decent and they are a powerhouse basketball school) as long as they got Texas and Oklahoma as well. I think the B1G still desires ND more than anyone else.

Who wouldn't be happy with the B1G adding ND/Texas/Kansas/Oklahoma? that would be ridiculous. Iowa would also get another border rival.
