Compare the 2004 Arizona State/IA matchup w/ the 2010 Arizona/IA

Is Arizona better than ASU was then?
Is the 2010 Iowa team better than the 2004 team?

How do these games compare?

It didn't turn out well last time to the desert.

ASU was a 9-3 team who beat Northwestern, Iowa, and Purdue in a bowl game in the same season. Their only losses were to #1 USC, #7 Cal, and an unranked Arizona.

The game where we played them was another late kickoff, made later due to thunderstorms in the area which delayed the game about another hour. It was Tate's first road start ever. Outside of that I can't remember that much...damn beer killing my brain cells.

Ferentz and the coaching staff have been preparing for Arizona since fall camp....they were practicing late at night to try and acclimate the players bodies to playing late at night.

There really aren't that many similarities between the '04 game and the one the Hawks play on Saturday.

You could make an argument that the Hawks played better on the road than they did at home last year. I like the fact that the DL is rotating six players in and out and there hasn't been a drop off in production.

It was the first game under kirk to be played that late at night plus it was delayed because of lightning. It was Drew's first road start EVER!

Look at the first orange bowl iowa played. They got WHIPPED because of a lack of prep. Kirk wont let the same thing happen this year in Arizona.

Also, IT WAS SIX F***ING YEARS AGO! Iowa got bitchmade by iowa state back in 05 and it had no effect on this years game. Any game played before 930pm this saturday does not matter.

If I remember we had an injury to Javon Johnson, which forced Shada into early service. Remember him just getting freaking toasted. One play in particular was a long TD and Shada was like 15 yards behind the guy at the catch.

Tate's 1st road start is the biggest difference when comparing the games

Really tho, they have nothing in common except for what Shada listed

Both are tough opponents on the road. The staff probably has a better idea of what to expect and I think both sides of the ball have more talent to work with as far as causing problems for Arizona than they did in 2004.

Andrew Walter was a really good QB. Foles is pretty good too - but he's nowhere near the level Walter was.

The play that I remember most clearly was the TD pass to Derek Hagan in the back of the endzone, and George Lewis ripped Hagan's helmet off, obviously resulting in a penalty. That play pretty well summed up the night.

I'm kinda sick of the comparison too. However, here are a number of stark contrasts.

Contrast #1: The '04 Hawks were green at QB and had no QB depth. What's more, the ASU game marked Tate's first career start away from home! The '10 Hawks have a veteran QB who has a proven record of winning big games. Stanzi's intangibles really matter in this sort of setting.

Contrast #2: Not to be mean, but Lee Gray was the closest thing to an elite talent that Iowa had on the OL in '04. Furthermore, key guys to Iowa's OL depth were Brian Ferentz and David Walker ... unfortunately, neither were regularly healthy up to that point in their respective careers (Ferentz didn't play and Walker probably shouldn't have played in that game). Overall, the '04 Iowa OL wasn't terribly experienced nor was it overwhelmingly talented or deep. In contrast, the '10 Iowa OL is pretty upperclassman-laden, by my estimation it has AT LEAST 2 elite players, and the overall talent and athleticism is pretty good. Drew Tate would likely feel completely spoiled if he had the 2010 Iowa OL blocking for him.

Contrast #3: Iowa entered the ASU game with only 1 really good RB. AY had just gotten injured and Lewis didn't seem like he was back to pre-injury self. In contrast, the '10 Hawks appear to have 2 proven RBs good to go for the UA game.

Contrast #4: I know that Iowa fans love the 2004 DL ... however, only 2 guys on the '04 DL truly merited regular double-teaming. In contrast, it could be argued that EACH member of the 2010 Iowa starting DL merits double-teaming. What's more, the 2010 Iowa DL is a strong and experienced 6-deep. The '04 DL pretty much had no depth past the starters.

Contrast #5: While Considine was a complete stud at safety for the Hawks ... Paschal was in his first year starting. In contrast, each of Iowa's starting safeties are multi-year starters.

Contrast #6: On top of having more experience at safety, the 2010 Iowa secondary, as a whole is deeper, taller, faster, more talented, and more experienced than its 2004 counterpart. Folks might argue with me here, but I honestly believe that Iowa's 2nd string CBs in 2010 are every bit as good (and talented) as Iowa's starting CBs were in 2004.

Contrast #7: Iowa likely didn't prepare adequately well for the '04 game. For the '10 UA game, the coaches have already worked extensively at night and I presume that they've been doing what they can to prepare for the heat. As other have alluded, the Iowa coaches learn from their past mistakes!

Good points Homer, but don't discount the Shada thing. He was just not ready to compete at that level when he was pressed into service. It was worse that Castillo during UNI or Lowe against ASTATE. He was just lost.

The only thing I remember was sitting at the OP in cedar Falls and The game was supposed to start at 9:30 and it ended up kicking off at 10:30 Iowa Time. The game finally got over around 1:40, just in time for the bars to close.

Really don't remember much after kick off, was pretty hammered the entire game.

CAARHawk -

I definitely agree. However, it's also important to recognize that Shada was just a TR FR, seeing action in only just the 2nd game of his career.

Thus, there's absolutely no surprise that he was lost.

jesus, i'm so sick of hearing this comparison. That was 6 years ago.
I agree!

There are ZERO players on this Iowa team who played in that 2004 game. Beyond the time the game starts and the temp it is a huge stretch to even start drawing comparisons.
