Come on folks, a little perspective AND some class

I know there were a couple (potential) missed calls/penalties. I know MSU has the "dirty" rep. I know D'antonio sounded a little cocky in the post-game stuff. I know we should have won/had better luck/done some things differently/blah blah blah.

I have seen more Hawkeye seasons than the majority of you. A few others have seen even more. I know we're ALL disappointed/heartsick.

But...perspective. And class.

To start with, in his way, D'antonio DID give us props late in his interview. And he has a right to be happy, and they are making their first trip to the CFP. The guy SHOULD be ecstatic, as should his players. And to expect he will show or have the same amount of "class" as KF is a tall order. There simply aren't many people like KF. Fact. But D'antonio is a decent guy, so give him the props and let it rest.

Plays/Calls/Results:
OK, we lost. There are things we "could" have done differently. But the staff and players played the game they have all season. And came half a foot and 27 seconds from an epic defensive stand.

Should Wadley have played more? Who knows and who cares? None of our RBs were ripping off huge chunks. Canzeri showed a glimpse before the injury. Wadley had one or two good gains. And he DEFINITELY showed that he is effective as a pass-catcher. But I've also seen posts denigrating Daniels, and a comment that Mitchell shouldn't see the field. Seriously? ALL the Hawk players left it on the field. Appreciate that. Savor the season.

The end zone INT: give it a rest. Bullough didn't make a helmet-to-helmet hit. He made a good play, and his teammate did, as well. Sucks for us, but it happened, and things like that will happen again.

Again, let's show the same measure of class that our coach and players showed in their post-game interview.

The pass to T. Smith...who will EVER forget that? And Koehn hit two FGS and a PAT when, frankly, that had been a concern recently. We DID get some pressure on Cook, and we made some big hits. And both Mitchell and Wadley are now, to my mind, proven threats in terms of running AND pass-catching. With the bonus of a bigger back in Daniels. The guys coming back next year will improve, and the guys that are gone after this season gave their all. If Ott/King/Duzey were ALL able to/should choose to return? It means next year begins as the Hawks being a co-favorite for the B1G West, not an also-ran. And it means there is a chance to "play from the lead" versus "having to EARN respect". You can only play the "under the radar" card so many times. Maybe we really ARE seeing that subtle change to the program that will have the Hawks back toward the top versus "consistent mediocrity".

But we lost. So we may as well have some class and appreciate an incredible season. Enjoy the holidays. Enjoy the bowl game. And for God's sake, root for MSU to win the CFP. As KF, CJ and Jordan L. did post-game, we need to exhibit some class. So do it.

Meh.....look at those making the most noise right now.......they are either a known troll, or some of the more bitter hawk fans on this site historically. I think 98.5% of Hawk fans can appreciate this year for what it was

I appreciate it has been a great year (with one more big game to go), but I feel the air has been completely let out of my balloon with this loss. Am I the only one* who didn't just want to have a good showing, but also to WIN?!? This hurts.

I don't feel proud about losing. I feel very proud of what this team had accomplished before last night's game, and they did have a great effort last night. But I wanted a Big Ten title and a final four. I predict that looking back on this, there is always going to be some lamentation of missed opportunities. Maybe I'll be wrong. I hope so.

* Non-troll variety.

Every Hawk fan wanted to win that game last night. 40K Hawk fans didn't drive to Indy, spend thousands of $$$ to watch a loss. Everyone wanted the B1G title, the playoff chance. It didn't happen, it sux, it hurts, but there is a lot to be proud of with this team.

Very proud of the season overall but I don't have much for positive vibes about last night. I am always proud of a hard playing team and there was no doubt about that last night. So while that was good, I honestly don't see much else to be pleased about regarding the game.

I see some people glad that we were in the game and showed we belong. That really didn't do anything for me. I knew we belonged already and had higher hopes than that. Maybe I should have paid more attention to the haters so I could be pleased we shut them up but I never bought into that in the first place.

I look at last night as a 99% disappointment. (Although, to be clear, I still look at the season at a 90% awesomeness rating with a chance to push that to 95%.)

I think most people were CRUSHED with the loss. Different people handle it differently. That is why I avoided any message boards last night, as I would have been bitter. For me the next day always brings perspective, some might take days, weeks, months, heck some might never get any perspective about this season and will be bitter about the loss forever.......I'm thinking maybe Thunder might need some long term therapy over this loss.

You won't hear me putting this team down.

I am as disappointed as anyone. It seems the Hawks can never get over the hump....1985, 2009, and now 2015....Iowa had legitimate national title chances but just couldn't get it done. Lucy pulled the football away again. Iowa may never have this opportunity again.

But it was still a great season! The Hawks will either be in the Fiesta or Peach Bowl. There isn't a fan who wouldn't have signed on for that last August. Kudos to Kirk and the players who gave their all last night!

I totally get that. But in my mind, we're four months from predictions where 9-3 was absolute ceiling, and 3-9 was just as prevalent in prediction threads as 9-3. 5-7 to 7-5 was by FAR the vogue.

12-0. Now 12-1. It's an incredible season. But if we had lost early then won last night, of course the feeling would be different.

I just have a hard time seeing folks ragging on the team and the coaches and the philosophies.

My body can't take that, exhausted, heartbroken,Yes so I really feel bad for the team. They left it all on the field but came up short,as a fan that's all we can ask.Hold your heads high,I'm proud to say that I'm a IOWA HAWKEYE.Good Luck in our Bowl Game,we can still finish with a win.I will take 13-1 so take a break ,get reenergized and start 2016 with a Win.Very Proud of all of you.

Dude...I won't even be thinking about this loss an hour from now. I pull the pin, detonate the grenade, and that's that. I don't try to rationalize with "great effort" and all that BS. I feel it and deal it.

Its already flushed.

You can't change the past. You can however wish pain on uberdouches Dantonio and Cook in the near future. That ain't as much a football thing as it is a karma thing.

Very well written! This team over achieved all season & I am very proud of their effort last night & the twelve previous games. I am disappointed, but not upset.

Yeah, we could totally tell.

As far as perspective, I agree with what bobber and Dean said about how people differ and process a loss differently, and need to with class. As well as what 340 said about feeling deflated...as for the whole overall disappointment....it goes to show just how much more important a conference title game and a play-in playoff game are compared to the also ran bowl games, that now appear as just a reward/bonus game that they are.

We were in the mix for the CFP, we the Hawk fans knew why, and now the rest of the country knows why. There's a reason that last night's game was pointed out by many as the most important game in Iowa history. Maybe, maybe not, but It certainly ranks up there. In defeat, we will still end up in the top 10 of the year end polls. Crazy to think what I and most others thought we'd be just 3, even 2, short months ago!
