Rob,
This may be the compromise that wins out in the end. It does make sense.I actually hope Kirk Ferentz continues to be the coach and brings in a top-notch OC (or as close to it as he can get). Get out of the way and let this person do the job. Brian can stay on as the O-Line coach or leave.
Well written and your points were all on target. I think your points would agree with most level headed people.
You know I have suggested this same thing, but I don’t see it. It hasn’t happened in 25 years and why would it change now? He is a control freak and also appears to be to full of pride to let go of his ways.I actually hope Kirk Ferentz continues to be the coach and brings in a top-notch OC (or as close to it as he can get). I agree and hope it hsppens. This may be the compromise that wins out in the end. It does make sense.
There were never any terms in BF’s contract saying he’d be terminated. I’m so sick of hearing people say that.Rob,
What do you suggest? Ignore or tear the contract up that Bf and KF agreed to? If they win 7 games and Iowa averaged 25 points a game you can darn well bet the Ferentz's would demand the terms for BF be met with a contract extension and raise.
So if the contract terms are not met, the terms in said contract should be followed as well. That is BF's contract is terminated.
He could be brought back as the o-line coach and Iowa can show Barnett the door. The latter cannot happen soon enough.
KF needs to hire an OC and let him take control much like he does with Phil Parker. Trust whom you hire and oversee it, don't put your own philosophy of stale offensive football on the new hire's head.
This has always been the answer, but it's something KFz will never do.I actually hope Kirk Ferentz continues to be the coach and brings in a top-notch OC (or as close to it as he can get). Get out of the way and let this person do the job. Brian can stay on as the O-Line coach or leave.
This. I have said this in past years. He needs to follow the path and do what John Beilein did when at Michigan his last years. Beilein had a pretty good offense but clearly lacked on defense. It was their missing link. He brought in a defensive specialist and admitted he had been too involved in the defense years prior and stated in an interview when the new coach came, he completely took himself out of the equation and let the coach work his magic.I actually hope Kirk Ferentz continues to be the coach and brings in a top-notch OC (or as close to it as he can get). Agreed. I believe the terms were that the automatic renewal provision would no longer be triggered, but I don't remember any provision saying that the AD has the right to unilaterally fire someone on KF's staff. BF reported to the AD for HR purposes, but staffing decisions are almost always left to the HC at Iowa and any other university. KF's 24 years gives him even more leeway than most. There were never any terms in BF’s contract saying he’d be terminated. I’m so sick of hearing people say that.
It was never in any contract that BF gets fired for less than 25 in a game.
Is that true? I would think the AD would have that power. Even regardless of the nepotism angle of all this. But especially so in this case. That's the whole point of BF having to 'report' to the AD instead of his Dad to begin with isn't it? It's probably extremely rare that it's ever done but I would think if KF dug his heels in the ADs power would win out. Could the AD cave to KF? Sure that's possible but I don't think she'd have to.Agreed. The AD will not fire Brian. KF will not fire Brian. Assuming KF decides to come back, there will be a mutual and professional parting of the ways where BF leaves for another lateral coaching opportunity.
That said, if KF digs in his heals and says BF returns, what really would anyone do? Grumble. That's it. This is KF's world and we are all just living in it, especially if he wins a few more games.

You may be right. But it does make one wonder what the line in the sand would be.Kirk will never be fired if he keeps having winning seasons. It will never happen. The donors love him.
The standard at Iowa is not championships, it’s bowl games.
If they average 6 points next year and win 6 games, he will not be fired.
Hawks don't score all season. You may be right. But it does make one wonder what the line in the sand would be.
Yeah I think the AD does. Hence the goofy contract BF had to sign to begin with. Nobody thinks he or KF was remotely good with having to do that. KF knew just how dumb and bad of a thing it would be to have such a contract be put on Brian but he couldn't prevent that from happening. So if the AD has the power to force them into agreeing such a thing then they should have the power to enforce the intent of it. Be it Barta, Goetz or whomever. What you're saying here is that the AD has more power than KF. Do you believe that?
