College GameDay Returning to Ames

ISU's fans are bad, but I didn't realize how bad a fan base can be until I lived in Nebraska.

Can you imagine a world with Nebraska and ISU both being relevant at the same time? That's like choosing from a bullet to the head or knife to the heart...Just kidding of course.

In all seriousness, it really does depend on how far you are from the fanbases. If you live in Central Iowa it is easy to find ISU fans annoying, but if you live somewhere that routinely gets Idaho and Iowa mixed up....you do not have a problem doing the rah,rah state of Iowa thing.

Same here, Mikey. ISU is one of my favorite teams to beat, but my days of pathological Clone hatred are behind me. A combination of old age and living out of state, I think.

I grew up in Iowa, it wasn't till I left that it really sunk in for me how small that place really is. It's not a bad thing, I enjoyed my time living there and there is a sentimental part of me that still thinks of it as home, but the the reality is that Iowa takes up approximately 0.0% of the national consciousness. Once every four years the national media converges on the state, but even then I think it's little more than a backdrop (to a coastal dweller, it might as well be any number of flyover states).

But it is a nice place with a whole lot of enthusiasm for college sports. I find it impossible to explain to people from more populated areas really how big of a deal college sports are in Iowa. The Iowa/ISU rivalry being a top 15 match up this year is a great way to showcase the rivalry and the state as a whole.

Honestly, Hayden's 15 year win streak - does anyone really care all that much? Iowa State was pathetic. Putting that win streak on a list of Fry's top 5 or even top 10 greatest accomplishments would feel like revisionist history, IMO. Clone fans probably cared back then because I'm sure it made some of them miserable, but I can tell you as a Hawk fan who grew up during that era, the ISU game wasn't even on my radar. That's not smack talk, that's the truth. I literally did not even consider the possibility of losing that game - hardly a foundation for a compelling rivalry.

I think it's way more fun now. Of course I want to see the Hawks rattle off another 15 in a row (we're 1/3 of the way there), but what makes it fun is knowing what an accomplishment such a feat would be today given ISU's improved status as a program.

I'll also risk a ban hammer and say, the ISU fanbase...eh, not so bad. Really their number 1 crime from an Iowa fan's perspective is proximity. They love and support their team with a passion that matches Iowa's despite the fact that their program (football, at least) was, up until very recently, historically one of the absolute worst in all of P5. I admire the passion, tenacity, and irrational hopefulness. Seriously, I'd rather be stuck in an elevator with 10 Clone fans than 1 Nebraska fan. I for one know what an obnoxious fanbase looks like.
Almost every clown fan I have met are pretty obnoxious too though. They seem to be the first to start talking smack about Iowa...unprovoked. They see your Iowa gear and off they go.

As a person who has lived in central Iowa his entire life, clowns are insufferable. And for some reason relentlessly optimistic. Maybe it’s a coping mechanism.

No, and I'm glad. I wouldn't want my son getting crap thrown at him.
Not taking a shot at bands or band members in general, but they shouldn't travel to away games at all.

I could maybe see it in 1937 when that was the only entertainment because they didn't have video boards, music over the PA, and replays.

I can see it at home games because of tradition, fight songs, etc. But I guarantee you no players or fans even notice a visiting band even remotely.

Why did you feel the need to express this? To me, who you know is a parent of one of the marching band members.

It is time to play with a chip on our shoulder. Iowa State is going to be ready. I know hawkeyes will be.we have nothing to loose now knock there f$$K out of them. Goo Hawkeyes

I just don’t see the point in a band traveling to away games. I get it for a bowl game or something because they both get to play on the field and it’s a neutral site, but sending a band to a road game is pretty goofy.

When I go to a road game I think it’s pretty awesome to see your band there and I’m sure the players appreciate it too. Good experience for the kids, I see no downside to it unless a handful of idiots want to act stupid.

If nothing else you’ve got a group of about 250 students rooting for the team.

I think traveling bands are great. Especially when the bands battle each other via their music. When the fans battle the bands, not so much.

Exactly, there is no downside to having both teams band in the stadium, it adds to the game day experience. I wish my son could go to Ames for the game this Saturday but it’s not worth the risk after what happened last time.

It’s weird Fry would come after me on this topic. He’s probably one of the guys rushing to the concessions or the bathroom in order to beat the crowd when the band comes on to the field. :)

Wasn't coming at you. I said the exact same thing back when there was all the hoopla going on over Tubagate at ISU last time.

I have a bad feeling we're going to lose some band members this year. Going in there will be more dangerous than the Marines storming Iwo Jima.

Totally agree. Bowl games is the only time you take bands on the road. Taking them to Ames was stupid to do to begin with.

My seats in Ames are typically right by where the opposing band is if they bring one. I kind of like it but I get it's not for everybody, it can get a little loud and cacophonous when both bands are playing and everybody is yelling and the speakers are going, etc.

Iowa band notified all road teams they wouldn't be going anywhere weeks ago due to COVID.
