College GameDay Returning to Ames

I know some might feel otherwise, but I think it's great for both schools and the state as a whole that this game is getting this much attention. It's easily one of the most underrated rivalries in the country IMO. The story of how the Cy-Hawk trophy came to be is legendary. No matter how good or bad either team is, it's usually a pretty good game.

Do people actually care / watch GameDay anymore. Show has been crap for years
Matt Campbell is stoked for their return.

This game is shaping up perfectly for the Hawks. For so many seasons this has been a lose-lose proposition. The Hawks win, they should have, it was lowly ISU. Heaven forbid the Hawks lose, it is a season-sinker. That is a lot of pressure to approach a rivalry game with.

Now, ISU is the favorite at home. The Hawks know a loss to them does nothing to affect their ultimate goal of winning the B1G west. ISU is in a position where they need to validate themselves against a team that has beaten them 5 times in a row. Iowa is coming off a shellacking of a top-20 team, but they were pretty sloppy in a lot of areas so there is a lot of tape to learn from. You could say the same about ISU, but their slop resulted in a nailbiter with an FCS school, which has to add a bit more pressure to them, as does the pressure of Gameday being there.

A week ago I thought this was going to be a likely loss for Iowa. Now I think Iowa can go in like it has nothing to lose.

ISU has the pressure of the world on them. They have 15 senior starters who know they could potentially go 0-fer against Iowa for their career.

They have a national audience, and last time that happened vs. the Hawks, they became a meme:

I think Matt Campbell is a helluva coach, and I think ISU has a really good team (the UNI game was a blip, don't ready much into it). But I am starting to feel optimistic.

Right now I still think ISU wins it in a close one. Each offense wants to kill you by a 1000 paper cuts. Based on what I saw yesterday ISU's O will probably be a little better at it.

Should be fun, although with everything happening between the Big 12 and ESPN right now I think the excitement level among fans is pretty low to have Gameday back. The scenes from last time of people swarmed around the stage I don't think will happen at all.

Good luck this week. As far as who wins, I expect a close game with an Iowa win, just simply because I'm going to have to see it to believe it.

I don’t think we have the offense to keep up with them but if our defense keeps it low scoring like UNI did then we have a shot. Purdy is on another level than Petras and the clowns will blitz the hell out of us. I haven’t seen Petras do anything good when he has to scramble.

Yeah they will, its ESPN!

I just hope the talking heads won’t be over killing the Bug 12 storyline.

I was in Vegas for the last one. I got so drunk at a bar waiting for the game to restart they cut me off and the only thing that made the next morning bearable was seeing we won.
Next time you're in Vegas feel free to come join us for the game watches put on by the Las Vegas Iowa Club. Game watch is at the Spring Valley Hooters which is west of Las Vegas BLVD.

Same here, Mikey. ISU is one of my favorite teams to beat, but my days of pathological Clone hatred are behind me. A combination of old age and living out of state, I think.

I grew up in Iowa, it wasn't till I left that it really sunk in for me how small that place really is. It's not a bad thing, I enjoyed my time living there and there is a sentimental part of me that still thinks of it as home, but the the reality is that Iowa takes up approximately 0.0% of the national consciousness. Once every four years the national media converges on the state, but even then I think it's little more than a backdrop (to a coastal dweller, it might as well be any number of flyover states).

But it is a nice place with a whole lot of enthusiasm for college sports. I find it impossible to explain to people from more populated areas really how big of a deal college sports are in Iowa. The Iowa/ISU rivalry being a top 15 match up this year is a great way to showcase the rivalry and the state as a whole.

Honestly, Hayden's 15 year win streak - does anyone really care all that much? Iowa State was pathetic. Putting that win streak on a list of Fry's top 5 or even top 10 greatest accomplishments would feel like revisionist history, IMO. Clone fans probably cared back then because I'm sure it made some of them miserable, but I can tell you as a Hawk fan who grew up during that era, the ISU game wasn't even on my radar. That's not smack talk, that's the truth. I literally did not even consider the possibility of losing that game - hardly a foundation for a compelling rivalry.

I think it's way more fun now. Of course I want to see the Hawks rattle off another 15 in a row (we're 1/3 of the way there), but what makes it fun is knowing what an accomplishment such a feat would be today given ISU's improved status as a program.

I'll also risk a ban hammer and say, the ISU fanbase...eh, not so bad. Really their number 1 crime from an Iowa fan's perspective is proximity. They love and support their team with a passion that matches Iowa's despite the fact that their program (football, at least) was, up until very recently, historically one of the absolute worst in all of P5. I admire the passion, tenacity, and irrational hopefulness. Seriously, I'd rather be stuck in an elevator with 10 Clone fans than 1 Nebraska fan. I for one know what an obnoxious fanbase looks like.

ISU's fans are bad, but I didn't realize how bad a fan base can be until I lived in Nebraska.
