College Football Analytics Phil Parker Evaluation

Yes, because if they don't try something to fix it, not only does it hurt the team it also gives the optics that they're too stubborn to admit that what they're doing doesn't work anymore.

I still stand by my premise that the staff will not take unnecessary chances on offense when they know they have an elite defense and special teams. During the Stanley era when the defense wasn't as elite they knew they were going to get into some track meets and planned accordingly.

And no Kirk doesn't play boring football just to stick it to the fans or just because he thinks he's untouchable. Those are boring, shallow and tired narratives that a seven year old could make.
@Northside Hawk I think the optics / national perceptions is that Kirk and Brian just don't know much about offense or lack imagination or both. And you're right they won't take unnecessary chances...or take any chances to improve....and I say because they have low standards for offense. Most HCs will insist on a higher level of performance. IT seems that KF has never done this.

Yet we regularly got into shootouts in the Bethard and Stanley eras. And for a long time Kirk teams averaged more ppg than Hayden's did when comparing careers.

Yes that's probably not true after the Petras years but is was for 90% of Kirk's career.

Kirk can be a great interview when he wants to be. But he too often comes off as smug and apathetic. That adds mightily to his national perception.

As for Kirk seeming to never insist on a higher level of performance I have to disagree. Look at some of the games we had in 2015 (Indiana, Minnesota, Purdue) Our offense put up veritable pinball numbers at times in 2018 and '19 culminating in the Holiday Bowl vs USC.

True, but somewhat deceptive. College football points per game did a steady climb from an average of 20.7 ppg in 1980 to 30.7ppg in 2020...that's nearly 50% higher. A coach with a tenure from 1999-2020 should have a higher ppg than one from 1979-1998.

Northside's point is fair. Everyone suffers from recency bias. Its human nature. The last two seasons have been ridiculously bad on offense, but KF and even BF have put together competent offenses in the past. All we need is an averagely good KF offense and this team will be very very hard to beat.
