Cole discusses player transfers, why he stayed

What a self-aware,grounded young man Jarryd Cole is...no wonder he has been a captain since his sophmore year. The kind of guy you would like as a son or son-in-law...a man's man. Thanks for everything,Jarryd...good luck to you!!

Jarryd is a man amongst boys. He has been loyal, hard working, flexible, and devoted to his adopted state. to boot, he has developed a mid range jumper, and hits it as well as anyone on the team. And makes his free throws when they count. Nice arch JC. If Matt Gatens has senior year like Jarryd, we'll move up the ladder for sure.

While I know that it won't happen, it would be cool if Cole ended up getting that GA position.

Our fans need to step up big-time, sell out Carver for the final home game, and give Jarryd the send-off that he so richly deserves. He's a first-class young man that deserves better than what the last 5 years have given him.

If he wants to coach, I have no doubt that he'll be a success.

Good for Cole. The player defections were maybe the most disappointing thing about the Alford/Lick years, and I admire Cole for not having been another name on that long list.

“I wanted to stay loyal,” Cole said. “That’s what I was taught at a young age, and that’s just what I felt was right. When I committed to the University of Iowa, I committed to more than just a coach. I committed to more than just a couple of guys. I committed to a community. I committed to a state. I committed to fans who don’t have the right to see Iowa basketball, but they’ve invested. So I wanted to show that I invested. I can’t offer any more than that.”

“In the perfect scenario you would have four years where nobody leaves, where the players stay, where the coach that you committed to stays,” Cole said. “You go through it and you battle together and you win or lose together as a team. I think if that would have happened, this whole four years would have been completely different.

“We lost a great point guard in Tony Freeman my first year here. He was a junior. You guys know about his upside; he’s a great basketball player and he even played great that junior year and he decided to transfer. My sophomore year we had Jake Kelly and Jeff Peterson, Jermain Davis came along, David Palmer, all those guys (leave). I feel like if we would have had that squad stay … there were a lot of things that could have added to what we could have done here. It’s a shame that those go out the window.”

“Survivor would be a good way to put it,” Cole said. “It’s been rough, it’s been tough. It hasn’t been ideal and things like that. But it’s been mine. I’m proud to say that.”

Classy, classy stuff. You can't help but love this guy.

A full CHA needs to give him a long, loud standing ovation next week.

I would love to see JC stick around and get that GA position as well...if for no other reason than to get to step out onto an NCAA Tournament court as a Hawkeye after helping get the team there, even if it's not as a player.

I got to speak with Jarryd for a few minutes after the other reporters were finished yesterday. He also added, when I asked him what kind of legacy that he wanted to leave behind:

"I don't know if you can define your own legacy. Other people do that for you. But I hope they have good things to say about me."

Really good, humble answer.
