Coaching

OSU,last 3 games. 59, 42, and 42 points. Had they not turned it over 4 times, they would have put up 50 plus playing a 3rd string quarterback.

Many lamented the fact that Oregon was missing some key players and they were. Not nearly, though, as key as the two quarterbacks that OSU was missing.

Love him or hate him, Urban Meyer can coach and is the best in the college game. It was fun to watch a game that coaches actually coached. We are so removed from seeing innovative coaching at Iowa that we have to enjoy it from other teams.

If Iowa comes out next year doing the same old stuff, you will see thousands of fans just walk away. TV sets will be turned off quickly. Apathy towards the program will dip towards 1970's levels.

That was my take from the game. I just wish at least once in my lifetime that the Hawks can put a team of that quality together. The talent on the field was so far above anything we've seen at iowa and the schemes were fun.

I agree with much of what you said, but I don't recall apathy in the 70s. I recall Hawk fans going to game because they loved the Hawks and having a great time

Envious... this is what I would use to describe the feeling I have for OSU. They have the type of coaching I long for and the recruits I dream of. That was a great game to watch but even more fun to watch Urban and his staff out coach Oregon. Ferentz isnt even in the same league as far as coaching. Makes me sick we have such a dud for a coach. Great man but is about as fun as a funeral and about as imaginative as a Ford Focus. We have a long and dismal road ahead with this staff. I pray he finds it in his heart to let of free during this Wednesdays presser.

i'm so used to watching iowa football, that when OSU would break off a nice run, my immediate thought was...run it again! Instead they mixed it up and threw it down field. Big plays Big Plays and more big plays. They seem to play to win.

Lol did you guys see the punt where Oregon snuck in the QB? Meyer called a timeout because he actually noticed....My god what I would give for a coach like that. Somewhere in Iowa City last night KF was yelling "Kick the damn field goal!" At his tv.

Kirk's offensive game plan is if you get 4 yards running on 1st down then you just have to run the same play 2 more times for a first down. Simple math.

If running on 1st and 2nd don't work then throw it 3 yards and let a wr run it.

just a bit has changed since then.......case in point: in the 70s, 'fans' were able to bring coolers of beer inside the stadium. Today, you can't even bring your own unopened bottle of water......

Have to agree with you on those changes. Remember sitting up in the corners having a great party on the grass

The place was smaller back then. Im guessing it was pretty full. I know it was a good time

in the 70s the capacity was 60k.

in '56 the capacity was raised to 60k (seats added to south end zone)

in '83 the capacity was raised to 66k. (north endzone enclosed)

don't need to look any further to lower attendance than in the early to mid nineties to 2000.

100% change, if that is possible, as far as what you are referring to - i was turned away once with my son because we had a couple unopened cans of pop in our coats.

You guys are right. Everything is terrible. I don't know why anyone even wants to be a Hawk Fan. Sorry guys I refuse to be a miserable as all you. Go Hawks

Obviously, the talent and ability is key but it really is as simple as making this the foundation of your approach to the game.

It's a mindset that every decision you make, every play you choose, every guy you play, every motivational word you speak is for the sole purpose of winning; not just field position, not just running the clock, not just to be competitive ... to f-ing WIN!

derKirkFer has directly contributed, if not outright caused, one or two losses, every season, for years, simply because he does things contradictory to this fundamental philosophy -- whether it's taking a knee, punting from the opponents 40, restrictive scheme, playing seniority and experience over talent, square players in round scheme holes, etc, etc, etc.

It's why he's a terrible coach. Any chimp can learn X's & O's; it takes a coach to match it up with your team to position them -- motivate them -- to succeed.

So many claim, "Yea, but Kirk does it the right way." Bu!!zhit - the Urban Meyers, Nick Sabans, Mark Helfrichs, Bret Bielemas, Pat Fitzgeralds etc do it the right way -- they don't care how you (player "X", God forbid, the opponent) feels, they only care if they / their team wins.

I'm not exactly sure how I want to say this because I want to do so without taking anything away from Urban Meyer because I think there is no doubt he's a better game day coach than Kirk.

But I'll never know exactly how much better of a game day coach he is because the huge disparity in talent. Obviously that credit goes to Urban because he recruits the talent but I think this thread is more specific to game day coaching.

The fact that he won a National championship with a 3rd string QB... I don't know if I'll ever wrap my head around that. You look at the NFL which one would assume would be a less of a drop from QB #1 to QB #2 since they are all professionals and guys who played their entire college careers as a starter but most teams have significant drops from 1-2.... let alone to 3.

Urban Meyer is a "light Years" better game day coach, recruiter and motivator than Kirk Ferentz.

Bowling Green. 8-3 and 9-3

Utah: 10-2 and 12-0 with a Fiesta Bowl win

Fla. 9-3, 13-1,9-4,13-1, 13-1,8-5 with two National Titles, 2 Outback Bowl wins, 1 Sugar Bowl win

OSU. 12-0, 12-2 and 14-1 with a National Title.

It isn't the X's and O's, it's the Jimmies and Joes. It's a belief that he is the best coach in the country, a practice of philosophy that allows him to achieve his highest goals, and a total commitment to winning.
