Coaching Staff

we run a cover 2. which is predicated on allowing the underneath stuff and not giving up the big homerun type play (which most teams are looking for). the goal is 1 of 2. 1) that most qbs arent patient enough and will screw up and not convert on third down or make a turnover. 2) if they are patient when you get into the red zone there is less field to cover and the zones over lap making it harder to score and teams settle for fgs.

the problem has been the dl not getting pressure. we will always give up yards. last i checked yards dont win games points do. with less pressure qbs are more comfortable and dont feel pressured to make the big play. this in turn causes shorter 3rd downs which are easier and less chance to force something.

this is like blaming the lbs for not doing great in our d. they rely on the dl causing double teams so they can roam. this yr the dl was single blocked a lot which allowed linemen and fbs and tes to get to the 2nd level and our lbs got caught up in something they shouldnt.

i hate when he says it because i think it should be known and he just says it too much but kf is right in saying it is about execution.

In the last 10 years, Iowa has sent more DB's to the league than any other team in the B1G

So, you're saying Norm Parker wasn't 'great shakes' when it came to pass defense strategy? Who knew? EDIT: but me.

No I'm saying that Norm and Kirk developed the strategy they thought was best. Foval clearly explained it above. Do you really think Phil should tell his players, "I know Kirk and Norm want us to play off and prevent the big play, but dammit, they're dinking and dunking all over us. To hell with Kirk and Norm, let's forget what they want. Start doing it differently?"

this just shows the lack of understanding that some fans have of sports concepts and philosophies and gameplans. each coach has their theories and they use them and their players skills to do the best they can. our dbs keep everything in front of them and play downhill. that is the concept of safeties in most any defense. that is probably why even our cbs become safeties in the pros. but remember they still became pros which means they are better than 99% of football players.

foval - please stick around and post more often. thanks.

Phil deserves a raise after considering Iowa's abysmal secondary showing throughout Phil's tenure?

We have (meaning several of us) clearly showed how dumb and just out and out misinformed that is. You were there in that last thread, you even tried to spin it and back pedal, so really get some new stuff, this is ALL wet……

^He refuses to be educated.

Anywhooo.....I would like to see:
Aiken at Co-DC/line
Parker at Co-DC/backs
Wilson with LB's
Woods with ST

personally i want
Stoops as DC and LB's coach Texas and SW recruiter
Wilson D-Line coach stay the same
Parker DB coach stay the same
Woods ST coach Florida recruiter

new blood, new idea's

And that still wouldn't leave us an open staff position TO FINALLY HIRE A REAL QB COACH!

as long as KOK is the OC, he'll be the QB coach. kirk's happy with it that way. if iowa hired a QB coach, what would KOK do, or what other coach would we cut?

Now I'm hearing no Aiken. Wow, no one really knows at this point...interesting.

Another good question is who will be taking L Woods' GA position?

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought LeVar was part of the program by way of being called an administrative assistant. As far as I know, he's not a GA (that's David Raih and Charlie...something).
