Coach McCaffery confirms Basabe coming off bench

Something makes me think Basabe is the type of player that might just fade into obscurity. I'm sure he'll get his minutes, especially at the beginning of the year, but if he doesn't seize the opportunity there are plenty of guys that will.

I think the most dangerous types of teams in college ball are the one's that have more than one player that can handle game situations, and have more that one star(s) each game, and not have one guy that the other teams key on ala "the go-to guy"....Now Mel had a great freshman year, and not so much last year.....the idea that we're bringing in an extremely talented class will only make Mel get better, and if coming off the bench is the key to that, then Fran made the right call...

Basabe strikes me as the kind of guy that needs a chip on his shoulder to play well. Good call as a 6th man.

Agree with this but a couple other reasons

1. Fran said Gabe and Mel play better together. Woodbury needs a shooter to create space and allow for kick outs which ZM provides.

2. Mel is very prone to early fouls and this will hopefully allow the game to settle in and actually allow him more minutes overall.

I just like the fact we have depth. Trying to think when we have had this much depth across the board. A nice problem to have. Creates competition in practice and players fighting for more minutes.

While I don't expect big numbers from Woodbury, I do expect him to have a very positive impact on the floor. His size alone will draw double teams and Woodbury is a good passer for a big guy. That will free up others. Definitely a good feeling to be excited about Iowa basketball again.

I agree. Someone in another thread thought the half court offense really fell off when Gesell left the floor. I thought it was Woodbury who really looked good in the half court, though. I can see why Aaron White, Zach McCabe and Woodbury should all be on the floor together. Woodbury's passing makes both those guys better. Zach creates space and him stretching the floor makes it harder to double Woodbury and Aaron white's movement without the ball and his ability to catch the defense asleep and cut to the rim is a perfect compliment to Adam. We're going to see Woodbury slip a lot of passes to Aaron White cutting to the rim for open dunks this year.

Basabe played fine when he started as a frosh. So I don't buy the "some guys play better coming off the bench" excuse.

McCabe has just developed a more consistent game at this point. He has worked harder than Basabe and is being rewarded. I do expect a bounce back season from Basabe this season. Regardless, total minutes are more important than starting positions in Fran's system.

I agree except for the bounce back part. How many stories did we read last year of Basabe losing weight and recommitting himself? About 500? All the while, McCabe busted his butt and built a BoneG worthy game out of nothing.
