C'mon Fran - Get Those Boys To Block Out!

This Iowa teams blocking out is atrocious. They give up way toooooo many 2nd chance possessions.

Brommer had a nice overall game & I hate to nit-pick, but he really needs to be quicker to get a hip on an offensive player.

Time & time again, a shot would go up & the players would just turn & watch then & creep toward the bucket instead of blocking out.

That's one of the reasons it is a solid career move getting to follow a guy like Lick to take over the program.

Any poor play....lack of execution.... can be pointed towards the awful development of players under Lickliter.

Guys weren't boxing out? Wellll, we are getting them there- the kids are being shown a few different things than under the previous reign. :p

Guys don't know how to play perimeter D? Last year's teaching methods have put us a little bit behind in that department, we're getting there.

Buys Fran some time.

Oh no. I'm definitely not getting on Fran's case as I think he is a good hire for Iowa & look foward to next year & beyond.

BUT, solid blocking-out is a standard principal of the game & doesn't matter who's regime one plays under. It has to be done under any coach. The first thing that is usually taught is defense & blocking-out with any new coach.

No team can afford to give up possessions, especially young teams or teams that are re-building. It is imperative to block-out.

I went to a UNI women's game a couple weeks ago & was thoroughly impressed with their blocking-out technique. One could easily notice it from the stands & the effects that it had.

It isn't like having a different offensive or defensive philosophy or playing style, blocking-out is blocking-out under any coach. There really is only one way to block out under any coach or coaches reign. Shot goes up, you find a player & get a hip on him. It really is not rocket science.

how about:

"c'mon, fran, get these boys to actually win a game"

the rest will take care of itself :)

I'd have to watch tape of our games but it would be interesting to see if we're giving up more O boards in man or zone. It's tougher to box out when we're in a zone as you have to go find a body to box out when the shot goes up. Also, not an excuse, but a lot can be said about having less athleticism than most of our opponents. Refs will give the benefit of the doubt to the "better" team. Also, more athletic, stronger, quicker teams get the calls. That sucks, but that's always how it goes.

You are correct. That definitely happens. Like a pitcher in the majors with creed will get certain calls. Just the way it is.

My point is that blocking-out is a part of the game where solid technique can help neutralize some of the opponents athletism. Yes, you will give up some due to being not as athletic or undersized, but a team can really help themselves with the correct technique to help cut down on 2nd possessions.

When a team doesn't have the athletes they would like, special attention to technique really needs to be made. Really no room for error.
