Closed scrimmage offense struggles

It's a fair question. Better to be asked at the end of the season - each of the last several years.

“Your offense ranked 121 out of 131 teams. Are you as head coach prepared to make changes?”

We know the answer. Did the media figures mentioned ask the question?
Wouldn't be worth asking because Kurt will just give a vague answer that doesn't say yes or no.

It isn't like he'll get pissed and make a change because of it, KF generally doesn't like media not named Leistikow and it's been that way for a looooong time.

Kirk and Brian know what the elephant in the room is, and they know we all know. But they don't care.

They also know, for Brian's sake, the offense HAS to perform better this year. If not, they are going to have to explain a lot, and they hate doing that shit.

This is it. He's been there long enough. They have to improve and perform.

From KF's perspective, he owns his boss, he is revered by the donor class, the fans generally are behind him as long as he keeps winning 8-10 games and beat the rivals, and he knows that he will have a statue someday. I don't think I would be too afraid of the Iowa "media" or internet grouches either. I would keep my son around at OC just like I kept my best friend around. At some level, he knows his son isn't a great OC but at another level he probably knows it is partially his fault given the style of play he demands.

As for BF, in the history of coaching, have we ever heard a coach say, "yep, I am just over my head and not very good at this job and probably never will be"? Humility is not in great supply in major college coaching. Hell, even Scott Frost, a man who spiritually bankrupted his alma mater and created the worst 4-year stretch at Nebbie since the 40s, looked the media and his boss straight in the eye and said he DESERVED another year. Coaches get fired. They don't typically surrender to their own ineptitude.

This only gets interesting if Iowa dips below the 8 win mark for multiple years. BF looks up to his father and I totally get that. If he feels by sticking around, it damages his father's legacy, he will have no problem of falling on the sword and moving on...I just don't think it gets to that point.

That being said, it gets complicated and super tricky, if the ultimate goal is for his Brian to be the immediate HC, after Kirk retires.

Yea, they can't get much worse. Improvement will be made, but, how much will be the deciding factor. Going from 121 to 95 will not move the needle much, IMO. It will still show issues and deficiencies.
We have great facilities, a very loyal fan base, a defensive coordinator that shows that a top twenty defense year in and year out is possible. So I see no reason why we can’t have a top fifty offense to compliment our defense. Our offensive line and tight ends easily fall into the top fifty, so that leaves receivers, running backs and of course our Achilles Heal QB. With all the revenue with TV revenue that is about to sky rocket we should be in great shape within a few years. Maybe this young dual threat Freshman will be just what the doctor ordered. Now get him some horses to throw to and we should be set.

This is the core of my frustration, we are so close to having what we need to pass up Wisconsin to become the perennial west division champs. Also at this point USC and UCLA aren’t what they used to be. Since Pete Carrol ran away to hide from his criminal activities, USC hasn‘t been all that. So even with those two PAC Ten teams to compete against, I think Wisconsin is still the team to beat out for the West title. Of course I assume UCLA and USC will be incorporated into the west division. I could see Purdue and possibly Illinois being peeled off to the East Division.

Imagine throwing Notre Dame into the West With that group? Poor little sister in Ames will become fly over territory. Since they are a ag school maybe their football field can be used as a cow pasture. :)

I remember how the Nebraska fans thought they would come in and rule the big ten. They soon found out that playing good teams week in and week out was a whole new world.

Maybe this is what is holding Notre Dame back.

Yeah. There is that. Penn St. was given the same prediction.

To me it would be so boring to not try to find a better way. If the current method of operation gives us an avg position of say 90 nationally (prolly close), why wouldn't one try to improve this? Same in same out seems so mundane. Who would want to coach this crap all of their career? Even with 8 win season averages, it sucks. Why suck if you can not suck? Why not be a top 10 team instead of a top 20?
