Cleveland.com sends clear Woody Hayes message to Iowa Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz

They mention how Kirk hasn’t won the conference, pretty sure ‘02 and ‘04 they won the conference albeit a shared conference title. He has also won the West 3 times. From article:

"Big Ten coaches are about to crown a new king, even though he’s never actually won the conference. With a win against UMass on Saturday, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz will break the record for Big Ten wins. He will pass former Ohio State coach Woody Hayes (205 wins) for the honor," Watkins wrote.

Just about every Iowa fan I know realizes that KF is way down the list in WP and conference game wins, and also that if you stay employed as a coach long enough you’re by default going to hit a certain number of wins.

This is a longevity milestone, not a “who’s the best coach” milestone.

National media are making a bigger thing out of this than we are

For sure longevity factors in. McCaffrey also has the record for Iowa coaches not because he was a great coach but because of longevity.
Kirk needs to retire now Bt For someone who grew up watching Iowa football losing 20 straight years Ferentz has had a great run at Iowa

Bingo.... Anybody trying to spin it into something else is just insecure and dishonest. Congrats on being a good coach that's been around forever. He's had a handful of magical seasons out of 26 or whatever it's been. But nobody is acting like KFs impact is greater then what Woodys was or whatever. But at least KF hasn't punched any opposing players before so I'm probably selling KF short in regards to that

No one is saying KF is the better coach. No one is saying that KF's career achievements trump that of Hayes. All it is is saying that he's won more games and there's no way to dispute that. There's also no way to dispute that KF has a better overall resume then

Did you read your own post? "No one is saying KF's career achievements trump that of Hayes", then you say "There's also no way to dispute that KF has a better overall resume than Hayes. Well, which is it? LOL

I think you should rent an excavator and dig up Woody's grave, open it, lift up his upper torso and punch him in the face, then post it on every Buckeye site under the following title "This is how you get a Woody!"

You would make hundreds of thousands of dollars on YouTube from all the views you would get. To even spice it up a little you could be wearing the same uniform and number of the player that woody punched in the face.

obviously just joking

Truth spoken on this post.

I dunno. I don't think they're making too much of it. It's not like Caitlin Clark big. Its not really escaping sports coverage into "news" coverage.

Because I think moat people realize that what he's accomplished isn't easy. Especially in this era. Nobody else has done it. Been awhile since ol Woody set it.

I think people absolutely realize the longevity of relevance at a single program is what is being awarded. That is manifested in accumulated wins. Anyone not from OSU is good with that. Because, again, that's really hard to do.

Few people have worked hard enough and pursued opportunity as well as he did. Nobody navigated ups and downs and whims of fickle fans as well as him. And also had some luck along the way. Except Kirk. So kudos to him.

Ive been a fan since I wasn't. I admit I was wrong in early years. Sometimes he still aggravates me. My concern level is quite high. I want him to finish with most of us still appreciating him.

Damn good post, dag! And though folks left early on Saturday, the remainder crowd, including me, gave KF a lot of love. The BT also saluted KF’s accomplishments. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised at their high level attention.

A side note: Post game our visitors moved onto the field to greet our Hawkeyes. Lots of hugs, both teams participated fully, went on for quite a while. A side note: When a visitor player went down and received serious medical attention, Iowa players stood quietly near the player. I also saw a small group of Hawks kneeling together in prayer. Unlike some teams/coaches our visitors did the wave. It was absolutely stunning with a full house and lighted phones. Never will tire of watching.

Question. Will those events and probably many others survive the new college game? Damn. I even enjoyed the band half time show…and Notre Damn lost.

I can counter the arguments. Woody Hayes did it at Ohio State with the top recruits, $$ & resources. Even the stadium digs were well above many other programs. Kirk did it at lowly Iowa. Would Woody Hayes have hit 205 at Iowa in the same time period? Prob not. Could KF have hit 206 in less years at Ohio St. Very possible. Enough said.

If nothing else KF would've done it without punching players/reporters/OSU president etc. and being the most gigantic asshole in the history of the sport.

How their fans revere that guy is beyond me.

There are so many arguments. And just respect the longevity and what he accomplished. Period. In ways, it's the argument people have about who is the GOAT in the NBA. My two cents, it's Michael Jordan. LOL. But people will argue about eras and etc. KF has been doing it for over 30 years. He has seen a lot and survived changes in the game. There's something to be said about that.

I think Woody coached for a similar time frame, however, the game has evolved much faster of recent than when he coached in my opinion.

The BIG network made a big thing of it. And I suppose they should. I don't think KF really wanted all that though. He enjoyed having Ant Heron there that's pretty cool with that he played for him and got that 1st win. So did Lavar Woods I think. It's just wild going back that far now and trying to remember all the different players and teams.
