Clay Helton out @ USC

This one is really awesome. His bastard child of a team that was supposedly a top ten squad...now he's telling everyone how pumped up he is about beating one of the worst teams in the country.

Yeah, by god...that'll show everyone how tough your team is. LOL

You should check out the Matt Campbell to USC rumor thread on CryFan. It's hilarious.
I bet. I have no doubt they have their panties all up in a bunch over it. They probably should. ISU doesn't have all that high of a ceiling they pretty much hit it last yr. They are losing so so much after this year Campbell will be all but rebuilding there anyway if he stays. Plus he'd still be in Ames freaking Iowa if he did.

At some point for a young coach the bloom comes off the rose if you stay somewhere like that too long. He's pushing his luck. I think he's gunning for the ND job or OSU down the road. He's plenty young enough to. But staying at ISU as long as that would take probably would be bad move. Timing is everything and so much of that is out of ones control too but I wouldn't stay at ISU 10 yrs if you have options like USC possibly on the table. That'd be nuts.

This goes for Fleck in MN too to an extent. It shouldn't surprise anyone if he were to jump ship to try and move up from there. I'm not sure he'd be considered for a job like USC though. Not as a top tier guy anyway. He'd probably crack the top 10 maybe. He'd need others to turn it down first. Anyone think he turns it down if offered? I don't.

Someone should tell that guy they weren't underdogs this past Saturday.

That previous post is glorious, I was wondering about #2 myself when Ashton Kutcher came in driving a combine painted in Hawkeye colors. But who could have GameDay brought in that graduated from Iowa State that anyone outside of Iowa would care about?

I hate Campbell and always will as long as he wears the ketchup and mustard. But he's a really good coach who gets players to buy in.

In Lames there's only so much you can do even if you're Nick Saban. You can't get top-level recruiting, you play in a JV conference, and you have zero eyeballs watching your games outside of a state most people can't point out on a map. Any young coach wanting a career instead of a job knows that and they know very well what they need to do to keep moving and that's get a big name job.

He can go on and on and on and on about how much he loves it in Ames, and their fans can go on and on about how he just signed a big extension. Welp, clown fans, you need to take off your ketchup tinted glasses...

Matt Campbell taking that extension was a super smart thing to do. It's a feather in his resume cap that tells prospective employers he's worth a whole bunch of money, and Campbell knows any big job that's worth him leaving for is going to have no problem paying the buyout. You're gonna be seeing him on a stage in the next year or two thanking all the people in Lames for the nice water, then going straight to the airport to get on a plane to Ann Arbor. And his ass ain't ever coming back to your shithole town, not even so much as a christmas card.

As far as ISU grads, they could've gotten their pres, Wendy Wintersteen. Would've been a great opportunity for her to further her PSA campaign about the dangers of welding on a gas tank before making sure it's empty...

Ah yes, bring in someone on GameDay that no one outside of Iowa knows and at least 90% of people inside Iowa have ever heard of. I guess they could have gotten Seneca Wallace, at least most folks in Iowa know who he is.

GameDay bringing in Kutcher was awesome and a real bitch slap to the Clones. I was loving it!

If Campbell is offered the USC job he should abandon ship at a dead sprint. The new Big 12 is not going to be part of the club. That will ensconce ISU and the rest into a forever cycle of 3 star kids as a ceiling (unless they cheat). And, if you think about it, winning the Pac 12 at USC will not be any harder than winning the Little 12 from ISU. Both conferences are equally dispersed, its just that the Pac 12 will be part of the club and Little 12 won't.

And, you really cannot even make the case that ISU is the USC of the new Little 12. ISU has been decent for like 5 minutes. USC is USC. They have trophies and traditions.

Maybe last year you could make an argument to stay with ISU and try to win titles from the platform that he built. That argument left with Texas and Okie.

After this season I agree that Campbell should jump ship. I see Iowa State rebounding from this loss and making a real good run in the B12, I think they can even beat Oklahoma. But they lose a real good class after this year and, as many others have stated, recruiting is going to become a huge chore. I don't think Campbell could leave at any better point in his career after this year, assuming they don't 'splat'.

All I can picture is that big revolving door I go through at the Des Moines V.A. Veterans to the right and USC coaches keep left. Yeah the door spins counter clock.

He can even keep his same attire!

I think he'll have better options than USC to go to. USC is like ND in that their fan bases expect them to be in the CFP every single year. It's next to impossible for any school outside of Alabama to be able to do it. And if Saban left, they wouldn't be able to do it year in, year out either. Campbell would be a better fit at a P5 top level but not elite school. Michigan, LSU, etc.

Timing is everything... Will USC wait till the season is about over to hire someone? Would Campbell actually leave ISU in the middle of a season? Not many coaches would do that would they? It'd be funny as hell to see happen to ISU but I can't see it actually happening. If USC wants him and they communicate on the down low now and they were to come to an agreement I wouldn't expect anything public till the season is about over first.

I would be shocked if they filled the vacancy before the season. Why would they do that? They have an interim staff and a season to play out. Hiring a coach midseason would be weird and a further distraction. And as noted, not many coaches abandon a team in the middle of a season and there aren't too many desirable coaches on the sidelines right now.

They fired him early to get the word out and start the backroom discussions and negotiations. They want the new guy in place in early December to hit the ground running on recruiting.

Who knows how this will play out, but I think USC may end up hiring Bill O'Brien. If that's the case, I think he calls Brian about being OC. I don't think it happens, but I bet Brian makes sure it's well known that he is wanted (gotta show he's not damaged goods and highly thought of by other programs).

Another possibility is that James Franklin takes the gig (I think he'd jump if offered). In that case, I think Campbell ends up at Penn State.

What they should do, in my opinion, is tell Chris Petersen to name his price. That's a slam dunk hire if the administration wants to win and also cares about the integrity of the program. Petersen may not have enough sizzle for them, though...but not sure why you wouldn't turn the keys over to him if he's at all interested.
