CJ got to play

Anyone else stay up late to see CJ get in there? He looked sharp. Basically running the two min O the whole time. I was texting a buddy of mine the possession before Mullens threw that last interception that I thought they should change QBs and then that happened and they finally did... It wasn't too late for CJ to have really been a hero but it all but was. If he and Kittle woulda hooked up for that 2pt conversion they most likely go to OT. But even that's tough to know for sure. Just wish CJ could get a fair shake seems like every time he's put in it's a tough situation with injuries to teammates, game situations whatever. Also heard that yesterday would have been his brothers birthday... Had to be a crazy day for him.

On the bright side he clearly put himself in the #2 spot over Mullens and prime time exposure is never a bad thing.

Yeah, he was playing a soft zone, but he still made a bunch of really tight throws and marched down the field. If he would've run the 2pt in the endzone and maybe ended up winning he'd be on the cover of every sports page. Little bit of a brain fart there, but I've seen George make way tougher catches than that.

All in all it was good to see him get some PT and show that he's not rusty after sitting a full year. Hopefully someone takes notice and can put him in a starting spot. Really the only thing he struggled with as the starter a couple years ago were some INTs but that can be cleaned up.

I never want to wish injuries on a guy, but I think it'd be nice if Garappolo had to sit a couple more weeks to give CJ a full game or so to sell himself.

That Oline really didn't do him Mullens or the running game many favors either. That was disappointing. A lot of their running success was of the reverse trickery variety with WRs. They are paying Trent Williams mucho dineros to be dominant and he frankly stunk up the joint. The tackle on the other side wasn't much better and he was a top 10 pick a few yrs ago he's supposed to be playing like it by now. It'd be nice to see CJ with a solid fair shake to really see what he can do. When he was thrust in there as a rookie and that 2nd yr that team stunk.

Yeah...even though they were playing a soft zone...the ball got out...and it was on the money every time. The 2pt conversion was a killer. Kittle catches that, or Beathard runs and I think they would have had a chance to tie it with a field goal. There is a reason they have kept him on the roster. He's pretty damn good. If anything...he got to audition for other teams last night.

I will tell you...if I'm Denver...I'd trade for him in a heartbeat. If Mullins is your #2...you have to trade Beathard and try to get a right tackle who can actually block someone. Honestly...I think Beathard is better than Mullins. Mullins showed what some pressure can do to him...he's not very good off schedule.

I thought the mistake the 9ers made was coming into the season not trading Mullens for something. He had built up some value. The NFL is all about that and the 9ers had a chance to maximize his by getting something back for him. Having 3 QBs is a luxury most teams don't need. With Jimmy G hurt and him doing well against the poor poor NY teams in back to back weeks (well enough anyway) I really thought a QB needy team may want Mullens. But now after him having a crappy outing like that you can forget it. Jimmy will probably be back next week and CJ will be #2 and Mullens will be sulking and worthless most likely inactive on game days...

That's a little bit of a double edged sword, though, Denver has gotten really, really bad the last 5-6 years and I think any QB is going to be in an impossible situation in that town. They are officially on the quarterback carousel like Cleveland was. The Broncos have had 11 different starting quarterbacks since Manning retired in '16. It's a QB graveyard.

I'd like to see him go somewhere where a QB is transitioning out and they need another long-term guy.

McGlinchey got beat twice in a row and CJ got hit while throwing. Wither one of those could have been INTs had they not made it OOB.

Kittle would have made those blocks, especially since they both went outside.

Yeah and the jury is still out on Lock I would think isn't it? Denver has been a piping hot mess at QB for awhile as you mentioned and Lock being hurt now sure doesn't help evaluate him. But I can't see where what little he's done should have them hitching their wagons to him. I don't think I'd go after either CJ or Mullens instead that would seem like treading water to me. I'd hope Lock gets healthy and give him a fair shot the rest of this yr and see what you got. But if he's not that great, next yr I'd be looking at seeing how high of a pick they have and if they want to use it on a Justin Fields or that NDSU Qb coming out. Or see what it'd take to get Dak Prescott or another proven QB that may be available.

I don't think Mullens is anyones long term answer at #1 either. But the teams with next to nothing for a #2 sure should see value in him (prior to this last game anyway) I think that #1 ship has sailed for him which is too bad for the 9ers. They had a shot at getting something of real value for him. I'm not sure what the value of a 'coveted' young on rookie contract that is a #2 guy is still may be but that's where they are. CJ is worth more to them to keep I would think. He's been there longer he's got more upside then Mullens and I don't think that's my Hawkeye colored glasses talking.

Yep...I think you have to keep Beathard too in SF. He's got NFL arm talent...and you know from his Iowa days...he's a gamer and can make big plays in big moments. I've been taping replays on BTN for awhile and I pretty much have the entire 2015 season on tape. Man, from Pittsburgh, Iowa State, Minnesota, Indiana...etc....Beathard made so many plays off schedule. Take the Pitt game...man, he was getting hit on almost every play...but he made plays. I don't think you appreciate it until you go back and watch those games again...just how much he did for that team. I guarantee you if we had had Rudock at QB in 2015 we are 8-4 or 7-5.

Agreed. It's been a mess in Denver. That being said, the franchise has proven it can win. Elway is on the clock right now though. He needs a player at QB and I don't think he can draft a rookie and start him next year...so that is likely two years away. People talk about Fields, etc...he's a few years away when he gets in the league is my guess...he won't be able to look to the sidelines and get his plays and formations in the NFL...it's a different level and if you didn't do it in college...well...it's a learning curve to read defenses.

The 2 years he was the starter, he was completely healthy in about 4 of them. He took a lot of hits in those 2 years......dude was tough.

When 100% healthy could you make the argument he was a poor man’s version of Trevor Lawrence?

I didn't see the game. Was Mullens really that bad? I heard he was doing pretty good up to this last game.

Do you really think Mullens would get demoted just because of 1 bad game?

Edit: ok, I just watched some of the highlights, that was one ugly performance by Mullens. Some his throws were so weak, it almost looked like he was hurt. I can see now why he got benched.

I think Mostert is hurt and he is their rushing sparkplug, super fast and makes big runs.

I don't think coaches will hold the two point play against a guy who hasn't played in a year, 90% of the time CJ will run that in easily. His throws were flying out on target and to multiple receivers. He was playing at a great pace in the two minute drill. I think Grap will be back next week but I hope he won't so CJ can have a start and see what he can do. Two Hawkeyes playing together is a real treat to watch.

What's his name, that analyst for the Sunday nite game, said it is now apparent around the league that if you jump on the 9er receivers and if Mullen doesnt get the ball out by 2.5 seconds he gets lost, off schedule, and struggles. The analyst said other defensive people around the league are catching on to this. It is like the whole baseball league finally catching on to a rookie pitchers stuff and starting to hit that pitcher.

In somewhat related news, I see that Jake Rudock 2 days ago was re-signed to the Miami Dolphins practice squad for the 3rd time this year.

Just when I think his NFL career is finally over, he keeps coming back for 1 more chance to play.

Yeah he was out. I'm not sure Barry Sanders woulda had a good day with that performance by the line though. McKinnon did ok actually but they couldn't sustain much it didn't seem like. Just a play here and a play there. Maybe he coulda busted one or two long ones and often in a game that's all it takes so you'd be right about that

And the Eagles were supposed to be the team with the decimated OL, right?

A combination of Mullens throwing the two worst interceptions of his career in the same game and CJ marching down the field like he was playing Double Dragon pretty much cemented him as #2.
