Christian Williams signs

Fran's just heading in a different direction perhaps......I love those 6'6" to 6'9" guys that are long, can jump, play good "D", and slash, and aren't afraid to pull up and dial one in....now granted we haven't seen any of the newbies coming in, and especially against the B1G competition, so hopefully we're all pleasantly surprised....

We return 5 of our top 7 players and 4 starters. Four of the 5 are seniors with a ton of experience and it's their last season in an Iowa uniform. Uhl is also back. All we need is 2 true freshmen to be solid contributors next season. The rest of the newcomers may or may not play. All we really need them to do is get stronger and be ready to get it done as sophomores.

There is a reason Fran wants his son to play point guard in high school, and Marble senior wanted Marble junior to play point guard in high school. It helps the player to develop all aspects of his game. Fran seems to love those guys. Williams, and Moss both have stated that they would like to play some point guard. They might end up playing point guard, but with their athleticism they should be a tough match up with small forwards and off guards. They even have the length to play some inside.

I read when Williams stated the plan for him is to actually play pg. That may also be the case for Moss, but Moss looks like he could be a legit scorer and maybe even push Jok in a couple of seasons. I read Williams reportedly has a 7ft wingspan. Yikes!

This is true, Iowa is 100% bringing him in as a pg. If he moves to another position it will be after he fails as a pg.

I cannot find a thing to not like about all 5 kids signed, already. They all seem very level headed and good kids. I really liked Williams' interview. Seems very mature and sounds like a leader. He also missed 13 games this season for some transfer rule, so he only played a half season and that likely stunted his recruiting.

They aren't very highly recruited and this class is ranked around the 60s nationally. Cyclone fans have repeatedly told me "how pathetic Iowa's class is" regardless of me telling them otherwise.

I don't understand Fran's recruiting. He seems to recruit positions in bunches. I think Fran would like a team of guys who play the 2,3,4 who are long and athletic. We've improved every year with Fran so I'm not judging anything. Glad to have the new guys and would love to have Dale Jones. I need to move away from my old fashioned thinking. The game has evolved.

I absolutely agree that Fran is showing his cards. He wants to have a bunch of guys who can play the 2, 3, 4, and maybe I would add the 1, who can play good D and run the floor and score inside or out...slashers. I frankly don't think he is big on a 5, unless he can find a REALLY big time 7 footer. I am like you, Doc: I have to move away from my old view of the game and what it takes to win. I give you a big thumbs up.

I know Fran has said in the past that he wants the most talented guys he can get...won't take a 5 just to take a 5. He has also said he won't take guys unless they fit in with the rest of the team...no interest in risking team chemistry.

I have said in other posts I have no problem with a team made up primarily of 6'5" to 6'7" guys. Denny Crum won 2 National Championships with this type of roster. And those were fun teams to watch.

I remember those teams as well. They were fun to watch. His guys could leap out of the gym!

Iowa has been shifting to this type of a team. I am excited to see ppl have to match up to iowa. It's simple though, guards and wings win in March. There are exceptions to the rule, like a veteran Wisconsin team, but they were a complete ball club.

I would look for Fran to focus on post players like Gabe, maybe a little further along than Gabe was as a freshman, but in the same mold.

Yep and it took Wisconsin having two borderline lottery picks and another future NBA pick up front to make up for their backcourt. And it caught up to them in the title game as Duke killed their guards.

Almost all of them had exceptional guards that carried them through in most of their games and probably at least one Aaron White level like forward. It's going to be interesting to see who steps up next year for Iowa. Good money has Uthoff being one of those people but he is going to need help. Uhl looks very promising and I am hoping Jok comes into his own and blows up and gives us the guard we will need.

I would guess 2 guys redshirt and Williams/Hutton will not be either of the two.

Boy, I don't know. An argument could be made that all 6 (assuming Dale Jones signs this weekend) would play. I think Wagner, Moss, Jones and Fleming are needs and the 2 that aren't needs are Williams and Hutton, though they could both help.

I think we might see 1 or 2 transfers after '15 (Ellingson and Baer) depending on how Flemings' FR season goes and whether Baer can wrest PT away from JU and DM. I like Ellingson as a pure shooter so I hope he stays and develops. I liked the little we saw of him last season.

To be fair, that's a pretty good time to have it catch up to you.
